New Music Teacher Panel Discussion: Tales from the Real World of Music Teaching

Clinic Synopsis:

Learn about the triumphs and challenges of being a first year music teacher. From a teacher whose instruments were stolen during the summer, to a teacher whose sensitivity, flexibility and insight gained her the respect of her ensemble in a few short weeks . . . these and other stories of success will be shared during this clinic. Specific strategies to maximize success in the first year of teaching will be shared.

Elizabeth Peterson - Biographical Information

Beth Peterson is currently an associate professor of music, and member of the music education department at the Ithaca College School of Music. Peterson conducts the Ithaca College Symphonic Band and the Brass Choir. She teaches instrumental conducting, secondary instrumental methods, and graduate level music education courses. Her research interests include the study of first year music teachers and the pursuit of music and life-long learning. Dr. Peterson is active as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and school music consultant in the United States and Canada. She presents clinics at the local, state and national levels in the field of music education. Peterson recently compiled her interviews and stories from first year music teachers in a book called, “The Music Teachers First Year: Tales of Challenge Joy and Triumph,” published by Meredith Music.
