Total Tone Transformation! Creating a Beautiful Sounding Ensemble: A Conversation to Empower Wind Conductors, String Conductors, and Those Who Do Both
Clinic Synopsis:
Learn the concepts of creating an artistic sounding string orchestra, wind ensemble, full orchestra, and concert band. This session will present specific language and techniques to empower teachers to speak with any instrumental ensemble about sound. This clinic will be very helpful to string teachers working with winds and band teachers working with strings.
James Tapia
- Biographical Information
James Tapia is in his thirteenth year as director of orchestral activities and professor of conducting at Syracuse University. He is music director and conductor of the Syracuse Summer Festival Orchestra and conducts the Syracuse Youth Orchestra and Central Winds: Music Educators’ Wind Ensemble. Prior to his work at Syracuse University, Tapia served as Director of Bands at Pittsburg State University and Associate Director of Bands at The University of Michigan, where he conducted the renowned Michigan All-State Orchestra and All-State Band. Tapia maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor, clinician, and lecturer, having served in these capacities in over 40 states and 15 countries. He holds degrees from the University of South Florida and The University of Texas at Austin.
Bob Phillips - Biographical Information
Pedagogue, composer, and teacher trainer, Bob Phillips is an innovator in string education. During his 27 years of teaching strings in Saline, Michigan, Bob built a thriving string program of over 700 students and was honored as teacher of the year 9 times by regional, state and national organizations. A recognized expert in the use of large group pedagogy and alternative styles, he has presented clinics throughout the world. Phillips has authored over 18 book series that includes 118 books for use in the string classroom including Alfred’s revolutionary new method, Sound Innovations for String Orchestra and Sound Innovations for Concert Band as well as the ground breaking Philharmonic series. He has had over 100 works published for orchestras and bands and is an award winning ASCAP composer. His conducting resume includes professional, All-state, and youth orchestras. Currently Bob is the Director of String Publications for Alfred Music Publishing and is the President of ASTA.
Erin Tapia - Biographical Information
Erin Tapia is an instrumental music teacher in the Westhill Central School District in Syracuse, New York. She conducts the High School Symphonic Band, Jazz Lab, 50+ student Brazilian Percussion Ensemble, and chamber music ensembles. Ms. Tapia is the district brass and percussion specialist, teaching in-school lessons to more than 120 students per week. Her students regularly perform in honor ensembles throughout New York State, and in the past ten years, more than forty of Ms. Tapia’s students have performed in collegiate instrumental music ensembles. Recently, Ms. Tapia co-authored “The Sight Reading Book,” a set of 21 sight-reading books carefully aligned with state-specific criteria at six different levels of difficulty. She maintains a private flute studio and performs with the Central Winds: Music Educators’ Wind Ensemble and the Syracuse Summer Festival Orchestra. Ms. Tapia holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Music Education from Syracuse University.
