Ensembleship in Practice: Techniques to Evoke Creativity in Rehearsal and Performance

Clinic Synopsis:

This interactive session will bring creative rehearsing to life with the help of musicians from the Glenn Korff School of Music. Ensemble games, creative and informative assessment strategies, and a wide variety of materials and metaphors will be demonstrated with suggestions for how to adapt them for use with diverse groups (choral and instrumental, elementary students through university).

Carolyn Barber - Biographical Information

Carolyn Barber (Hixson-Lied Professor of Conducting/Director of Bands, University of Nebraska – Lincoln) earned a BM in horn performance at Northwestern, an MM in horn performance from Yale, and returned to Northwestern to earn her DM in conducting as a student of John P. Paynter and Victor Yampolsky. Barber began her career as a lecturer and assistant to the dean of the Northwestern University School of Music. Her duties included teaching advanced conducting and directing the university’s Concert Band. She also served as the director of bands at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and principal horn of the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra. She has received numerous awards for musical and academic achievement, including the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts Distinguished Teaching Award. Her writing has been published in the Journal of Band Research and Teaching Music Through Performance in Band. Dr. Barber maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor throughout the United States and Canada.
