Vocalization in the Orchestra Classroom: Developing Musicianship Skills Through Sequential Aural Training

Clinic Synopsis:

This session will present activities based on Kodaly’s aural and literacy based training and designed to deepen knowledge and musicianship skills in an orchestra classroom. Solfege will be used to teach musicianship through audiation, sight singing, transposition, and melodic dictation. The audience will participate in classroom activities and watch video clips of first through third year students in action as they perform sight singing, apply to their instrument, transpose and take dictation.

Frances Oare - Biographical Information

Frances Oare is in her 29th year of teaching and eighth year with the Wichita Public Schools. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, and a master’s with emphasis in string pedagogy from Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She also has extensive experience and training in the Suzuki Method, and recently completed her level three Kodaly certificate at Wichita State University. For the past nine years, Mrs. Oare has been on the faculty of Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan where she conducts the middle school concert orchestra. In Addition, Mrs. Oare has performed extensively as a French hornist, acting as principal horn and soloist with the Olympia Symphony Orchestra and has also performed with the Honolulu Symphony, Northwest Wind Symphony, the Disney All-American Band, and the Olympic All-American Band performing for the 23rd Olympiad in Los Angeles. In 2013, Mrs. Oare was chosen as the Distinguished Middle School Teacher for the Wichita Public Schools.
