Teaching and assessing brass and woodwind tone quality is a complex process. Cavitt will explain the heuristic problem solving process necessary to improve tone quality through guided experimentation with variables.

Mary Ellen Cavitt is Professor of Music Education and Associate Director of the School of Music at Texas State University in San Marcos where she recently received the Texas State University Alumni Teaching Award of Honor and the Everette Swinney Faculty Senate Teaching Award. Dr. Cavitt also serves as Assistant Professor of Horn at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas. She received Bachelor and Master degrees in horn performance from The Juilliard School, Ph.D. in music education from the University of Texas at Austin, and is a recent graduate of the Harvard University Management Development Program. Dr. Cavitt serves as a teaching consultant and has presented her research at numerous national and international conferences.
