Latin Style for String Orchestras

Clinic Synopsis:

Engage students with the exciting pulse of Latin rhythms that sound authentic in the string orchestra. The clave, or groove, is easy and exciting to teach to young string players. Come experience the various Latin styles and watch a live orchestra learn and perform this vibrant music.

Victor López - Biographical Information

VICTOR LÓPEZ is a highly acclaimed composer, arranger, and adjudicator, and has achieved much success in music performance, education, and administration. He holds music degrees from the University of Florida and Florida International University. For 16 years he served as director of bands at Mays Junior High School and Miami Senior High School, and for 19 years, he worked as an administrator in various capacities in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS). He was the principal at G. W. Carver Middle School, which under his leadership received the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award, and Miami Senior High School, his alma mater. Among his many accomplishments, López served his community as a councilman in the Doral Community Council in Doral, Florida. He has also participated in the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium committee, which drafted model arts education licensing standards and supporting materials for national certification. Furthermore, he was a founding board member of the Florida Schools Music Association, a non-profit organization that oversees all of the music activities in the State of Florida. He is currently an assistant professor at Nova Southeastern University and an exclusive composer/arranger and clinician for Alfred Publishing Company with over 450 publications to his credit.

Becky Bush - Biographical Information

Becky Bush is String Acquisition Editor at Alfred Music Publishing, Adjunct Professor of Music Education at Grand Valley State University, conducts the St. Cecilia Concert Orchestra, and was the founder and director of the Hudsonville Public Schools orchestra program from 2001 to 2006. A graduate of the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Music Education and of Grand Valley State University with a Masters of Education, she performs as a violist with the Signature String Quartet and is a music director of the American String Teacher's Association Elementary String Camp. She has taught at a variety of summer camps and has been a guest conductor throughout Michigan both in classical music and fiddling.

Tony Falcone - Biographical Information

Anthony M. Falcone is the Associate Director of Bands at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His duties include directing the Cornhusker Marching Band, conducting the Symphonic Band, teaching instrumental arranging, and assisting with the administration of all university bands. He is also active in the Percussion Studio, teaching lessons, and conducting the Percussion Ensemble. He has held previous appointments at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville; James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia; and Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. He earned his B.M.Ed. and M.M. degrees from James Madison University where he studied percussion with C. William Rice and conducting with Dr. J. Patrick Rooney. He was also a student of concert artist Leigh Howard Stevens in his intensive Summer Marimba Seminar.
