Music for All of Us: Reflecting Society Through Repertoire Selection

Clinic Synopsis:

This clinic will offer an overview of different wind band minority composers, primarily African-American and women composers. Included will be their significance and works worthy of further investigation and performance ranging from grade levels 1-6. It is our hope that is presentation will enhance programming considerations for conductors, widen the breadth of composers and works studied in undergraduate classes and promote the music of underrepresented populations.

Tremon Kizer - Biographical Information

Tremon Kizer is the Associate Director of Bands/Director of Athletic Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Central Florida, where he oversees all aspects of the athletic band program, including the direction of the UCF Marching Knights. Furthermore, he conducts the Symphonic Band and teaches courses in music education and conducting. In addition to his conducting duties at UCF, he is the principal conductor of the Youth Band of Orlando, a high school honor wind ensemble in partnership with Conn-Selmer and American Youth Ensembles. Tremon Kizer is an active guest conductor, adjudicator, and leadership consultant throughout the United States. As a guest conductor, he has conducted numerous district and regional honor bands. As a champion for improving leadership skills for high school and college students, he teaches his model for how to maintain a year-around leadership program through leadership seminars for high school band programs. He has been on staff for numerous music camps, drum major clinics, and collegiate and high school concert and marching band camps. Engagements for the 2017-18 academic year includes presentations at the Midwest Band and Orchestra International Conference, Southern College Band Directors National Association Regional Conference, conductor of the Kansas Music Educators South Central Honor Band and numerous clinician and adjudication appearances across the United States. Dr. Kizer earned a undergraduate degree in music education from Kansas State University, a masters degree in wind conducting from the University of Central Missouri and a doctorate in wind conducting from the University of South Carolina. Prior to his tenure at UCF, he served on the music faculty at the University of Dayton, taught courses at the University of Central Missouri, served as Director of Bands at Coffeyville College and taught 5-12 instrumental music in Goodland, Kansas.

Jaclyn Hartenberger - Biographical Information

Jaclyn Hartenberger is the Conductor for the UGA Wind Symphony, Associate Director of Bands, and Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Georgia’s Hugh Hodgson School of Music (HHSM). She also conducts for UGA’s MOD[ular] ensemble which is comprised of faculty from HHSM and teaches undergraduate and graduate conducting. Her national conducting activities include appearances with the West Point Band, the Concordia Santa Fe Winds, and various regional and district honor bands. Her international conducting appearances span the Czech Republic, Brazil, and Italy. In 2014, Dr. Hartenberger created UGA’s annual study abroad program for undergraduate conductors. In 2015, she was chosen to be a distinguished Lilly Teaching Fellow at UGA. Dr. Hartenberger holds degrees from the University of North Texas (B.S. in Music Education) and The University of Texas at Austin (M.M. and D.M.A. in conducting). Her career began as a middle and high school band director in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Her professional affiliations include the College Band Directors National Association, the Georgia Music Educators Association, and the National Association for Music Education.

Brandon Houghtalen - Biographical Information

Brandon Houghtalen is the Associate Director of Bands and an Assistant Professor of Music at Abilene Christian University. His responsibilities include directing the Big Purple Marching and Basketball Bands, conducting the Concert Band, supervising the instrumental music education program, and studio horn. Additionally, he is the hornist of the Key City Winds woodwind quintet. He previously held conducting positions at the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of New Mexico, and in the public schools of Fayette County, Georgia. Houghtalen earned degrees in music education and conducting from the University of Tennessee, University of Colorado, and Arizona State University. His primary conducting teachers include Gary Hill and Allan McMurray. In June 2015, Houghtalen was a featured clinician of the First National Band Camp of Guatemala, where he taught conducting, wind instrument pedagogy, and co-directed the first national marching band of Guatemalan students. Also in 2015, Dr. Houghtalen joined the conducting faculty of the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts, an intensive summer program for talented high school students. Houghtalen frequently collaborates with emerging and established composers including Anthony Barfield, Steven Bryant, Jennifer Jolley, David Maslanka, and Alex Shapiro. He has premiered and/or commissioned works by Paul Hembree, Daniel Kellogg, Carter Pann, Greg Simon, Steven Snowden, and Joseph Turrin. He continues to serve as a clinician and conductor of honor bands and ensembles in Texas and across the United States.

Rodney Dorsey - Biographical Information

Dr. Rodney Dorsey is the Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Conducting at the University of Oregon. Previously, he was the associate director of bands at the University of Michigan where he conducted the Concert Band, taught undergraduate conducting, and conducted the Michigan Youth Band. Prior to this appointment at UM, Dorsey served on the faculties of DePaul and Northwestern Universities. Dorsey studied conducting with Dr. James Croft, Mr. John P. Paynter, and Dr. Mallory Thompson. He was a clarinet student of Mr. Fred Ormand and Dr. Frank Kowalsky. He gained extensive experience teaching in the public schools of Florida and Georgia. Ensembles under Dorsey's direction have performed at several state and national events including the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival. He is active as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator in the United States. Recent presentations include sessions at the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association Intercollegiate Band (guest conductor), Georgia Music Educators District Band Festival (adjudicator), and Kentucky Music Educators Association State In-Service Conference (presenter). Dorsey holds a number of professional memberships that include the College Band Directors National Association, Music Educators National Conference, Illinois Music Educators Association, Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. Dorsey is also a member of the Midwest Clinic Board of Directors.
