Working with horns in an ensemble can be a daunting task for non-horn players. This clinic is designed to give practical suggestions along with illustrations and demonstration of effective techniques for teaching horn in an ensemble setting.
Laurie Lafferty

Laurie Lafferty, Professor Emeritus, The University of Akron, received her undergraduate degree from Baldwin Wallace College, a Master’s in Music Education from Youngstown State University, and a Ph.D. in Music Education from Kent State University. Her teaching assignments at Akron included wind & percussion pedagogy, rehearsal techniques, student teaching supervision, University Band, and graduate core music education classes. Prior to her appointment at Akron she was band director in Fairfield Local Schools, Leesburg, OH; junior high band director, Wapakoneta, OH; Lecturer of French Horn, Ohio Northern University; band director (17 years) Buckeye Local Schools, Ashtabula, OH; and junior high band director, Chagrin Falls, OH. Throughout her teaching career her bands consistently received superior ratings at Ohio Music Education Association sponsored district and state adjudicated events. In addition, her bands and horn ensembles performed under the direction of many nationally known composers and conductors and at local, state, and national conferences.
Dr. Lafferty is an active member of OMEA, having served on various state committees, holding district office, and adjudicating at district and state level competitions. She has guest conducted and presented clinics at conferences throughout the United States including presentations at Ohio Music Education Association Conferences; Music Educators National Conference; Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic; the California Music Education Conference, Bay Section; the North Carolina Music Educators Association; the New England Band Director’s Institute; and the Montana Band Masters/Montana Music Education Professional Development Conference.
Dr. Lafferty has articles on music education published in The Instrumentalist, The Band Director’s Guide, Triad, and Contributions to Music Education. In addition, she has young band arrangements published by Carl Fischer, Heritage Press, Ludwig Music Publishing, and Great Works.
Dr. Margaret Tung is the Visiting Assistant Professor of Horn at University of Kentucky. Hailed as “masterly” in the Chicago Classical Review and “spot on at every moment” in The Plain Dealer, she has performed with the famed Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Zurich Opera Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, and was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Dr. Tung is currently principal horn of CityMusic Cleveland Chamber Orchestra. In 2016, Dr. Tung commissioned John Cheetham’s Sonata for Horn and Piano and performed the world premiere at the acclaimed International Horn Symposium. In 2011, Dr. Tung had the privilege of collaborating with Yo-Yo Ma in Once Upon a Symphony, a new Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) project. She performed the world premiere of Spangled Unicorn by Anna Clyne with the CSO’s new music ensemble, MusicNOW. Dr. Tung performed Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 3 with the Colorado College Summer Music Festival as the concerto competition winner. Other festivals she attended include Music Academy of the West, National Repertory Orchestra, and Spoleto Festival USA. She can be heard as a featured soloist with Anima on their CD release, An Anima Christmas. Her most recent recording release was Grammy nominated with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra entitled Concertos for Orchestra with principal music director, Louis Langrée. As an avid educator, Dr. Tung has held positions at The University of Akron, Kutztown University, and Olivet Nazarene University. She is currently on faculty at Marrowstone Music Festival in Bellingham, WA. She completed her Doctorate of Musical Arts at The Ohio State University and holds a Master of Music from Rice University and a Bachelor of Music from DePaul University. Her teachers include world renowned Dale Clevenger, William VerMeulen, Jon Boen, and Bruce Henniss.
