Go Play Outside! A Contextual Discussion on the Benefits, Drawbacks, and Stigmas Associated with Outdoor Brass Playing

Clinic Synopsis:

This session will explore the similarities between performing a brass instrument in outdoor ensembles and within a concert setting, discussing ways of educating brass players that will provide a solid foundation for all performance mediums. This will feature The Cavaliers brass section modeling these techniques in conjunction with some surprise professional guest artists. It is our goal to demonstrate that quality education begets quality brass playing, no matter the musical endeavor.

Freddy Martin - Biographical Information

Freddy Martin is the founding director of the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps. He held the position of executive director of the corps for fourteen years and is now Director Emeritus of the corps. Freddy is a member of the DCI Hall of Fame and was most recently the brass caption coordinator for the world-champion Phantom Regiment. Freddy has delivered clinics and seminars all over the country and in England. He is a Bands of America judge and a clinician for some of the finest high school marching and symphonic bands in the country. Freddy has given clinics in Georgia at the Music Educators Convention, in Chicago at the Midwest Clinic, and for Spirit of Atlanta camps for the last 34 years. Freddy is currently band director at the prestigious Westminster Schools in Atlanta. Freddy’s son Chris is principal Trumpet in the New York Philharmonic while his younger son Michael is a member of the Trumpet Section of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Teaching has been Freddy’s life, and he loves to share the knowledge he has gained over these 48 years of educating young people.

Chris Martin - Biographical Information

Christopher Martin joined the New York Philharmonic as Principal Trumpet, The Paula Levin Chair, in September 2016. He served as principal trumpet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) for 11 seasons, and enjoyed a distinctive career of almost 20 years in many of America’s finest orchestras, including as principal trumpet of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and associate principal trumpet of The Philadelphia Orchestra. He made his New York Philharmonic solo debut in October 2016, performing Ligeti’s The Mysteries of the Macabre, led by then Music Director Alan Gilbert. Praised as a musician of “effortless understated virtuosity” by The Chicago Tribune, Christopher Martin has appeared as soloist multiple times nationally and internationally with the CSO and music director Riccardo Muti. Highlights of Mr. Martin’s solo appearances include the 2012 World Premiere of Christopher Rouse’s concerto Heimdall’s Trumpet; Panufnik’s Concerto in modo antico, with Mr. Muti; a program of 20th-century French concertos by André Jolivet and Henri Tomasi; and more than a dozen performances of J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2. Christopher Martin’s discography includes a solo trumpet performance in John Williams’s score to Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln (2012), the National Brass Ensemble’s Gabrieli album, and CSO Resound label recordings, including the 2011 release of CSO Brass Live. Dedicated to music education, Mr. Martin has served on the faculty of Northwestern University and coached the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. In 2010 he co-founded the National Brass Symposium with his brother Michael Martin, a trumpeter in the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and in 2016 he received the Edwin Franko Goldman Memorial Citation from the American Bandmasters Association for outstanding contributions to the wind band genre. Christopher Martin and his wife, Margaret — an organist and pianist — enjoy performing together in recital and, most especially, for their daughter, Claire.

Drew Dickey - Biographical Information

Christopher Drew Dickey serves as Brass Caption Coordinator with The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, as Director of Athletic Bands at the South Carolina School of the Arts at Anderson University, and on the administrative team at Southwood Academy of the Arts, a 6-12 public arts magnet school. At Anderson University, his responsibilities include teaching and overseeing the low brass studio, conducting the AU Brass Ensemble and Pep Bands, and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in music education and music theory. At Southwood Academy, Drew oversees educational instruction and provides professional development to both academic and arts teachers on curriculum development and assessment, technology integration, and arts integration, as well as coordinating the school’s arts magnet recruiting programs. Prior to his current appointments, Drew served as Graduate Conducting Associate with the Louisiana State University Department of Bands and has spent many years as an educator and administrator in the South Carolina public schools and the drum and bugle corps community. Ensembles under his direction have earned numerous awards and accolades, and he serves as an active judge, clinician, and performer. Drew holds the degrees of Master of Music in Music Education from the Ithaca College School of Music, Master of Music in Wind Conducting from Louisiana State University, and Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of South Carolina. In addition, he is a Google for Education Certified Educator and Trainer and is certified as an Apple Teacher. His professional affiliations include the College Band Director's National Association, the South Carolina Music Educator’s Association, the National Association for Music Education, the International Tuba Euphonium Association, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Kevin LeBoeuf - Biographical Information

Kevin LeBoeuf currently serves as Brass Caption Manager with The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps. LeBoeuf previously served on the Carolina Crown brass staff for three years, and performed as a member the four-years prior. During his time at Crown, he served as horn sergeant for two years, was a part of 5 Jim Ott high brass awards, won brass member of the year in 2013, and corps member of the year in 2014. Kevin’s undergraduate degree is from Rutgers University, completing his degree in 2014 in music education. While at Rutgers, he studied Euphonium under Dr. Stephen Allen, who started LeBoeuf’s interest in British Brass Band performance and literature. LeBoeuf continued on to complete his graduate degree in wind-band conducting, under the instruction of Dr. Travis Cross at the University of California, Los Angeles. Outside of Drum Corps, LeBoeuf balances a career split between New York, Los Angeles, and Japan. He serves as the brass caption head for the Aimachi marching band in Handa, Japan. In 2017 LeBoeuf started the first marching brass clinic in Nagoya Japan, drawing over 150 participants in its first year. In 2016 he served as brass caption head for Aimachi Winds, winning their first WGI gold medal in the organization’s history. In Los Angeles, LeBoeuf begins his fifth year teaching the UCLA marching band under the direction of Gordon Henderson, and performing as a freelance commercial instrumentalist. In addition to music instruction, LeBoeuf started his own live sound business in 2014, “Central Jersey Sound,” and is a part owner of “Gabriel Sound LLC.” Both companies purpose is to provide professional installation, repair, rental, and consultation for all things sound. Kevin is also a traveling wedding DJ, church music director, and a spoken-word recording artist.
