The Fabulous Front-Row: Optimizing Your Flute Section

  • A great flute section can make any band director smile but sometimes the fabulous front-row creates unexpected challenges. In this session, Allen and Garner Santa discuss common misconceptions of the flute and its role in the band and offer suggestions for maximizing potential, and removing barriers for optimal ensemble contribution.

  • Dr. Eric Allen is Associate Professor of Music and Assistant Director of Bands at Texas Tech University. He serves as conductor of the Texas Tech Symphonic Band, teaches conducting, and teaches courses in music education. He also assists with direction of the Goin’ Band from Raiderland. Under his direction, the Texas Tech University Symphonic Band has performed a diverse series of concerts including many collaborative performances with faculty solo artists. The ensemble recently performed at the CBDNA Southwestern Division Biennial Conference in Boulder, Colorado. Allen’s recent work with conductors includes presentations at the Texas Music Educators Association Conference and the Florida Music Educators Association Conference. He contributes annually as a featured clinician at the American Conducting Symposium at Puebla State Conservatory in Puebla, Mexico. Prior to Texas Tech, Dr. Allen served as Director of Bands at Sebastian River High School in Florida where his ensembles performed at the National Band Association Conference, the FMEA President’s Concert, the National Concert Band Festival and the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. Dr. Allen frequently serves as a guest clinician in secondary schools throughout the region. He holds Bachelor and Master of Music Education degrees from Florida State University and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Allen is an active member of the Texas Music Educators Association, the College Band Directors National Association and the Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Mu.

  • Lisa Garner Santa
  • Lisa Garner Santa currently serves as Artist-Performer and Professor of Flute at Texas Tech University where she enjoys a diverse career as a teacher, recitalist, soloist, and chamber musician. Her playing has been described as "luminously beautiful" - Audio Video Club of Atlanta, "soulful" - All Music Guide - and in general, she has been described as a "remarkable artist with dazzling musical ability" - American Record Guide. Lisa Garner Santa presents masterclasses throughout the United States and abroad. International exchanges include masterclasses and performances at the Royal College of Music in London, England, Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand, and most recently at Peking University in Beijing, China. Her students have been prize winners in numerous competitions including the NFA Young Artist, Myrna Brown, Frank Bowen, and Byron Hestor competitions. Research interests include Yoga and the Creative Arts: Philosophy and Practice.
