A message from The Midwest Board of Directors and Staff regarding the 2021 Conference

The Midwest Clinic Board of Directors and staff are excited to continue making plans for our 75th Anniversary conference, December 15 – 18, 2021.  In light of the current uncertainty surrounding Covid-19, we wanted to send an update regarding the status of our event as well as the steps we are taking to ensure the best possible in-person experience for our attendees, clinicians, musicians, and staff.

It goes without saying that the music education industry is one best-served in-person.  Virtual interactions simply cannot replace the connections made and conversations had.  We are grateful for all of the virtual resources that helped us get through the last year-and-a-half, but we feel strongly that live events need to resume.    Barring a state or city mandate requiring us to cancel our live event, we will have an in-person conference in December.

McCormick Place and the City of Chicago have gone to great lengths to address the health and safety concerns for conference and event attendees.  For a complete guide to all of the facility updates and sanitizing protocols instated by McCormick Place, please visit its Healthy Meetings website.  McCormick Place has also received a GBAC Star Accreditation, the gold-standard for outbreak prevention, response, and recovery in the cleaning industry.

Below we have outlined the procedures and recommendations as of this date. We are in constant contact with both McCormick Place and the City of Chicago, reviewing and updating our conference plans.  While some aspects of this year’s Midwest Clinic may look different, the opportunity for educators, industry partners, and students to join together is well worth the extra effort and coordination. As we draw closer to December, we will send periodic updates.  For the most up-to-date information, please visit our website.

ATTENDEES: As of this date, McCormick Place requires facial coverings inside McCormick Place West. For the safety and well-being of all in attendance, The Board of Directors will require all non-performing attendees (including Midwest staff, volunteers, and exhibitors) to provide proof of vaccination or documentation of a negative COVID test completed within 72 hours prior to the start of the conference.  Proof of vaccination can be uploaded during registration or presented at the registration desk when claiming credentials.

PERFORMERS (including ensemble directors): McCormick Place currently requires facial coverings inside McCormick Place West. Performers are exempt from this requirement while performing. The Board requires directors to present a document at the conference verifying that all members of community and professional ensembles, all chaperones, and all guests have either been vaccinated or have presented a negative COVID test within 72 hours of their arrival. This does not apply to individual middle school, high school, and college ensemble members. The Board also encourages all performers to follow Illinois Department of Public Health guidelines. As of this date, the guidelines recommend that individuals playing aerosol-producing wind instruments remove their masks to play their instruments (with a bell cover as necessary) and immediately replace their masks when not playing. Directors are encouraged to wear masks if closer than three feet to the ensemble.

EXHIBITORS: The board encourages exhibitors to sanitize all instruments, devices, and products handled by attendees between uses.
