Performer Bio Synopsis

Lamar Middle School & Fine Arts Academy is part of the Austin Independent School District in Austin, Texas. The campus opened in 1955 and is one of 18 middle schools in the district. Lamar Middle School & Fine Arts Academy provides an inspiring and robust program for students across Austin interested in pursuing an accelerated arts curriculum as fine arts academy majors. Lamar Middle School & Fine Arts Academy follows a block schedule with all classes meeting for approximately 90 minutes every other day. The Band program consists of Symphonic Winds, Symphonic Band, Jazz Factory and Beginning Band. The Symphonic Winds consistently received superior sweepstakes ratings at UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest as well as best in class, and overall outstanding band honors at festivals around the state. In 2015, the Symphonic Winds performed at the Music for All National Band Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 2015, the Lamar Jazz Factory (Jazz Band) was an invited ensemble at the 69th Annual Midwest Clinic.

Conductor's Bio

James Hairston is entering his eleventh year of teaching and has taught at Lamar Middle School & Fine Arts Academy in the Austin Independent School District since 2009. Prior to AISD, he was the Assistant Director of Bands at Bassett Middle School in El Paso, Texas. In 2004, Mr. Hairston received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico, where he studied under Rhonda Taylor and Dr. Kenneth Van Winkle. In 2008, he received a Master degree in Saxophone Performance from The University of Texas at Austin where he studied with Mr. Harvey Pittel. While at The University of Texas, Mr. Hairston was a member of the UT Wind Ensemble under the direction of Mr. Jerry Junkin. At Lamar Middle School & Fine Arts Academy, Mr. Hairston conducts the Symphonic Winds, Jazz Factory and assists with the Symphonic Band. He also teaches Beginning Woodwinds. Mr. Hairston’s bands have consistently received UIL Sweepstakes ratings, as well as best in class, and overall outstanding band honors at festivals around the state. In 2015, the Symphonic Winds performed at the Music for All National Band Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana. Mr. Hairston is currently a member of the Austin Saxophone Ensemble.
