Performer Bio Synopsis

The Southwest High School Chamber Orchestra, from El Centro, CA, is widely recognized by many as one of the most successful programs in California and known for its excellence in performance. They regularly earn Unanimous Superior ratings at the SCSBOA Band and Orchestra festivals both at the district and region level. They have performed in such venues as Avery Fisher Hall in NYC where they were featured on a concert premiering Mark Wilberg’s Requiem, Orchestra Hall in Chicago and Carnegie Hall in NYC. They have also performed at past ASTA National Conventions in Santa Clara and Atlanta and have been regular participants at the Northern Arizona University Orchestra Festival where they recently received “Best in Show” honors. They are also regular participants of the CMEA (California Music Educators Association) State Band and Orchestra Festival at UC Davis--earning Unanimous Superior ratings for the past two years. The SHS Chamber Orchestra maintains an active performance schedule with local and national events throughout the year. Their repertoire ranges from music of the Baroque through the modern era—regularly championing the music twentieth-century composers. The SHS Chamber Orchestra is one of three orchestras at Southwest High School and its members are selected through a rigorous audition process. In all, the orchestras at SHS consist of 100 students. Southwest High School is located in El Centro, CA and is part of the Central Union High School District. The CUHSD consists of three high schools—Southwest High School, Central Union High School and Desert Oasis.

Conductor's Bio

Dr. Matthew Busse received his Bachelor of Music in Composition and Theory from Sam Houston State University where he studied composition with Dr. Newton Strandberg, piano performance under Dr. John Paul and conducting with Dr. Carol Smith. In 1996, he received his Masters of Music in Music Theory at the University of Houston studying composition under Dr. Robert Nelson and theory with Dr. John Snyder. In 2012, he received his doctorate in Conducting from the University of South Carolina where he studied with renowned conductor, Dr. Donald Portnoy. From 1998-2004 he was the Director of Orchestras at Cypress Creek High School in Houston, TX and also taught at North Harris Community College. In 2002, he founded the Northwest Houston Symphony Orchestra, a community orchestra which he later took on a seven city tour of China with renowned pianist, Tian Jiang. From 2004-2005, he was the Director of Orchestras at the Savannah Arts Academy in Savannah, GA. Since, 2007, Dr. Busse has been the Director of Orchestras at Southwest High School in El Centro, CA., leading the Chamber Orchestra in concerts around the nation—including performances at Avery Fisher Hall in NYC where they were featured on a concert premiering Mark Wilberg’s Requiem as well as Carnegie Hall in NYC and Chicago’s Orchestra Hall. He also serves as assistant conductor of the Imperial Valley Symphony.
