Performer Bio Synopsis

The Frost Flute Ensemble is made up of all the performance majors ranging from freshmen to graduate students. The Ensemble has performed multiple times at the Florida Flute Convention as well as at the National Flute Convention. Their performances this year include the New York Flute Fair and the Midwest Clinic in Chicago as well as at Festival Miami. Their repertoire encompasses works from all periods and especially works by the composers of the Frost School. The Frost Flute Ensemble has commissioned a number of new works. These include Thomas Sleeper’s “Concerto” for flute and flute orchestra, Dorothy Hindman’s “Mechanisms”, Shelly Berg’s “The Wind”, Sam Pilafian’s transcription of “Tiger Rag” and a number of transcriptions by Trudy Kane. The Ensemble has recorded both the Sleeper and the Hindman; performances can also be found on YouTube.

Conductor's Bio

Trudy Kane joined the faculty of the Frost School of Music, University of Miami in 2008 after 32 years as Principal Flutist of the Metropolitan Opera. Currently active as a recitalist and chamber musician, she has also done a number of transcriptions for multiple flutes. She loves performing new works and has been actively involved in the creation of some. Ellen Zwillich's Concerto Elegia was commissioned by the Frost School for her in 2015. Her favorite title is teacher and she is thrilled to be sharing the wealth of her experience with the next generation.
