Performer Bio Synopsis

The Allen Percussion Ensemble consists of 70 students grades 9-12. Students are enrolled in band year round and participate in marching band, concert band, percussion ensemble, and solo contest. In the fall, percussion performs as a part of the 700+ member Allen Eagle Escadrille. Both the varsity and JV drumlines compete in local drumline contests and support the Allen Eagle football team. The Allen Percussion Ensemble puts on an annual concert featuring all 115+ percussionists in the district grades 7-12. This “Supercussion” concert has been running for over 20 years and is a staple event in the community.

Miles Locke is in his fourth year as Director of Percussion for Allen ISD. In Allen, Mr. Locke oversees one of the biggest percussion programs in the country, with over 140 percussionists grades 6-12. In his short time at Allen, Mr. Locke has established a fundamentals-based curriculum, created a competitive JV drumline, and has re-structured the percussion studio to create more well-rounded musicians. Prior to working in Allen, Miles was the assistant percussion director at Keller High School for 3 years. While there he assisted the marching band and drumline as they competed at 3 BOA Super Regionals, 2 State Marching Finals, and attended the 2018 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for which he wrote the percussion music in their national television performance. Mr. Locke is a world-renowned composer and self-publishes his works. He currently has music on the Texas PML for percussion and most recently won the Texas Christian University composition contest for his trombone ensemble To New Beginnings. Mr. Locke has also written marching percussion books for numerous schools across the country. Miles graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from TCU after studying with Dr. Brian West, Joey Carter, and Jeff Hodge. While at TCU, Miles was part of the Fred Sanford award winning 2012 PASIC drumline. He was also a part of the winning recording for the 2015 PAS Call for Tapes. Miles participated in the Horned Frog Marching Band, Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band, Percussion Orchestra, and Steel Band. Prior to TCU, Miles studied at Blinn College with Dr. Sarah Burke receiving an Associate’s in music. Miles has marched drum corps with Revolution Drum and Bugle Corps and the Boston Crusaders. Miles has performed overseas in England, Normandy Beach, Volterra and Rome Italy. Other influential teachers and mentors include Russell Wharton, Aaron Capers, Ellis Hampton, Carlos Botello, Chris Lennox, Frank Chapple, and Martin Blessinger. Miles’ professional affiliations include Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, and Percussive Arts Society.
