What to Expect at the High School Institute

Get ready for a jam-packed day of exciting opportunities

For just $25, you can take part in The Midwest Clinic’s High School Institute, an exclusive one-day program for high school students interested in pursuing a career in music education. An experience that promises not to disappoint,  the music education clinic offers you the chance to connect with like-minded students as well as world-class leaders in the profession.

The all-day event features:

Valuable leadership training
: Giving you a taste of what it’s like to lead a group of musicians, our special seminars are led by Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, a well-known author, musician and former band director with a dedication to training the next generation of music educators. The sessions equip you with leadership and life strategies as you learn from Dr. Tim and collaborate with other students.

Tons of exhibits: You’ll feel like a kid in a candy store as you step into The Midwest Clinic’s expansive exhibit hall, showcasing the lateest tools, techniques, materials and trends in music education. You can visit with instrument manufacturers, try out instruments and pick up handouts from your favorite booths. And, when you see an instrument or tool you just can’t do without, jot down all of the important information on our Wish List that can be printed out before you head to the event.

Informative lectures from music industry leaders: From Grammy award-winning artists to experienced music professors from around the country, high-profile speakers are thoughtfully chosen each year to lead special sessions catering to you, the high school student. Past topics covered include “So You Want to Be a Music Major?” and “How to Have a Successful College Audition.”

Inspiring live performances: Bringing in the finest instrumental ensembles from around the globe, the clinic provides the opportunity to hear performances by world-renowned groups. Past performers have included the U.S. Army Band and Wynton Marsalis. See the High School Institute schedule for this year’s concerts.

Invaluable mentoring from college students: Each year, college students return to this event to invest their time in high school students by serving as mentors. Connecting with them is a great way to learn about the college application process and what classes are really like for music majors in a degree seeking program.

College Night
Starting at 5:30 p.m., College Night is the perfect opportunity to visit with representatives from top universities and military branch music programs from across the country. Bring your questions about auditions, classes, college life and requirements and have them answered by the experts. The evening event is free and open to the public.

Does this sound like music to your ears? Ask your band or orchestra director to register you now for the 2016 High School Institute from The Midwest Clinic. Enrollment is limited, so don't miss this opportunity to pursue your dreams.
