Clinic Synopsis:

This rehearsal clinic will provide practical information to band directors regarding: building ensemble sound, the establishment of daily fundamentals, developing a variety of articulation, appropriate use of dynamics, establishing melodic and vertical intonation and interpretative ideas.

Alfred Watkins - Biographical Information

Mr. Watkins is a highly decorated, nationally renowned director, clinician, educator, author, and cherished friend of the Rose Parade. He is the retired director of the acclaimed Lassiter High School Band in Georgia, a participant in the 1988, 2001, 2005, and 2013 Tournament of Roses Parade. His Lassiter Bands were the 1998 and 2002 Bands of America Grand National Champions and won 125 of 132 marching band competitions entered. His concert bands have performed at the prestigious Midwest Clinic on five occasions and have received three major awards from the John Philip Sousa Foundation, which lists his Lassiter Bands as one of the historic high school bands in America. He is the founder of the Cobb Wind Symphony and co-founder of the Minority Band Directors National Association.

Stephanie San Roman - Biographical Information

Stephanie San Roman is the Director of Bands at Oswego High School.  She conducts the Wind Symphony, assists with the Wind Ensemble, and co-directs the Symphonic Band, Symphonic Winds, Concert Band, Chamber Winds and the Panther Marching Band. Mrs. San Roman received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Illinois in 2006 and a Master’s in Music Education from Vandercook College of Music in 2010.   She began her teaching career at Oswego High School as Associate Director of Bands in 2006 and became Director of Bands in 2009.  Bands under her direction have been selected to perform at the Music for All National Concert Band Festival (2019, 2015), the Music for All National Chamber Music Festival (2019, 2016), Illinois Music Educators Association All State Conference as a featured performance (2018, 2014) and clinic ensemble (2022), the Superstate Band Festival at the University of Illinois (selected 2014-present), and the WIU Showcase of Bands (2016). Mrs. San Roman was a first runner up in the 2012 National Band Association Young Conductor Mentor Project Competition and studied under Dr. Mallory Thompson at the 2011 Northwestern Summer Conducting and Wind Music Symposium. She has articles published in both the Illinois Music Educator and The Instrumentalist along with her guidebook Score Study Fundamentals for the School Band Director.  Mrs. San Roman holds seven Citations of Excellence from the National Band Association and received the Chicagoland’s Outstanding Music Educator Award in 2021.  Her professional memberships include the Illinois Music Educators Association, National Association for Music Educators, The National Band Association, Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity, the American School Band Directors Association and Women Band Directors International.  She lives in Oswego with her husband, Juan, and their children Sophia, Santiago, and Estefania.
