CHAT: The Right Piece at the Right Time: Choosing Repertoire to Bring out the Best in your Orchestra

Clinic Synopsis:

A great piece of music can still be the wrong choice for your ensemble. Drawing upon nearly four decades of classroom experience in a wide variety of educational settings Shelly will lead a discussion on strategies for selecting concert and contest literature that ensures growth and empowers students to perform at their best.

Shelly Burger - Biographical Information

Shelly Burger holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Chapman University and a Master of Arts in Education from University of Phoenix. Ms. Burger recently retired as the Orchestra Director at Green Valley High School after a 37-year career with the Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Prior to teaching at Green Valley, Ms. Burger led award winning orchestras at Bonanza High School, Advanced Technologies Academy, and Sierra Vista High School. She was also a Conductor and Coach in the Las Vegas Youth Orchestra program for 22 years and currently serves as the director of the LVYO Sinfonia.  Ms. Burger’s orchestras performed on a variety of stages including a 2017 performance at Lincoln Center, a 2014 performance in Chicago Symphony Hall, 2008 and 2010 performances in Carnegie Hall, and two performances at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois in 1998 and 2018. During her tenure in CCSD Ms. Burger was active in both the community and school district in addition to her teaching responsibilities. She chaired the CCSD Honor Orchestras for many years and participated on numerous committees developing policy and curriculum in CCSD. Ms. Burger is a member of the Nevada Music Educators Association and served as an All-State Orchestra Chairperson multiple times. She was also on the staff of the ASTA National High School Honor Orchestra, served on the ASTA K-12 Advisory Committee, and is currently serving as a new teacher mentor for CCSD.
