Performer Bio Synopsis

The School of the Arts Symphony Strings were a featured performing group at the Midwest Clinic in 2019 just months before the pandemic. The full symphony won the top award of Grand Champion at the 2016 ASTA National Orchestra Festival in Tampa, FL. The high school orchestra program currently has 74 string students total; they are divided into a lower-level Chamber Orchestra, and the School of the Arts Symphony, which has about 50 string students, plus woodwinds, brass and percussion. The symphony performs standard college/professional level string and full orchestra literature by composers like Tchaikovsky, Sibelius and Dvorak. They meet every other day (on B Days in their A/B block schedule), and students take a string technique class with Dr. Selby on A days. One of those string classes, known here as the School of the Arts Sinfonietta, won the top award of Grand Champion last year at the 2023 ASTA National Orchestra Festival in Orlando, FL.
