Performer Bio Synopsis

The Green Valley High School Symphonic Strings from Henderson, Nevada, has accumulated many awards and accolades in their over twenty five years of performances. The orchestra receives consistent superior ratings at both local and national festivals. They have performed at prestigious venues worldwide including Edinburgh Castle in Edinburgh, Scotland, Chicago’s Symphony Hall, 2 performances at Carnegie Hall and in 2017 they performed at Lincoln Center in New York City. Community outreach programs and school functions are common for the GVHS Orchestra schedule. The orchestra services over 200 students offering opportunities to play in any of the four orchestra classes in both string and full orchestra configurations. Students also have an opportunity to play chamber music in class and after school. You will find students of every culture and background on the GVHS Orchestra roster. These students are active student leaders participating in countless school activities, clubs sports and service organizations. The GVHS Symphonic Strings are excited and honored to return to the Midwest Clinic for the second time.

Conductor's Bio

Shelly Burger holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Chapman University and a Master of Arts in Education from University of Phoenix. Ms. Burger is in her eighth year directing the Green Valley High School Orchestras and has been an Orchestra Director in the Clark County School District for over 30 years. Prior to teaching at Green Valley Ms. Burger led award winning orchestras at Bonanza High School, Advanced Technologies Academy, and Sierra Vista High School. She was also a Conductor and Coach in the Las Vegas Youth Orchestra program for 22 years. Her orchestras have performed on a variety of stages including a 2017 performance at Lincoln Center, a 2014 performance in Chicago Symphony Hall, 2008 and 2010 performances in Carnegie Hall, and in 1998 her Bonanza High School Orchestra was the first music group from the state of Nevada to perform at the prestigious Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois. Throughout her long teaching career Ms. Burger has been active in both the community and school district. She maintains a large private violin/viola studio, has chaired the CCSD Honor Orchestra for many years, served as a mentor to both college students preparing to enter the music teaching field and to new orchestra directors in the Clark County School District, and has participated on numerous committees developing policy and curriculum in CCSD. Ms. Burger is a member of the Nevada Music Educators Association and served as an All State Orchestra Chairperson multiple times. She is also Past President of the Nevada Chapter of the American String Teacher’s Association and was on the staff of the ASTA National High School Honor Orchestra.
