Performer Bio Synopsis
The Berry Miller Band Program serves more than 300 students from Rogers Middle School and Berry
Miller Junior High in Pearland ISD. Students begin their musical training in 6th grade at Rogers, where
they develop fundamental skills in instrument-specific classes before continuing their studies at Berry
Miller in 7th and 8th grade. At the junior high level, students perform in one of five concert bands or
percussion ensembles before advancing to Glenda Dawson High School.
The program is dedicated to fostering a lifelong appreciation of music through performance while
developing discipline, collaboration, accountability, and perseverance. All students participate in weekly
sectionals and individualized instruction with a band director, and more than 70% of students study
privately with professional instructors. Honors Band students represent 100% private lesson participation
and regularly engage in masterclasses with professional musicians, including performers from the
Houston Symphony, Houston Brass Band, and Houston Ballet.
Since 2008, Berry Miller bands have consistently earned Superior Ratings at the UIL Concert and Sight
Reading Evaluation. The Honors Band has placed 4th, 5th, 9th, and 10th in the TMEA Honor Band
Competition and performed at the 2024 National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis. Both the Honors
and Symphonic Bands have been recognized as National Winners in the Mark of Excellence and Citation
of Excellence competitions, while all performing bands regularly earn Best in Class honors at regional
festivals. In 2022, Berry Miller received the John Philip Sousa Sudler Cup in recognition of sustained
excellence in middle school music education.
Berry Miller regularly leads Region 19 in student selection to TMEA Region Bands, with students also
participating in the Houston Youth Symphony, UIL Academics, athletics, clubs, and the National Junior
Honor Society.

Chris Bennett is a veteran music educator entering his twentieth year of teaching, continuing a sustained tradition of excellence at Rogers Middle School and Berry Miller Junior High School. Under his direction, the Berry Miller Honors Band has earned seventeen consecutive UIL Sweepstakes Awards, performed at the 2024 Music for All National Concert Band Festival, and been recognized multiple times as a National Winner in the Foundation for Music Education Mark of Excellence Competition in both the Class AA and New Music categories.
Prior to his current role, Mr. Bennett served as Director of Bands at Bayside Intermediate School (Clear Creek ISD) and as Assistant Band Director at League City Intermediate School (Clear Creek ISD) and Baines Middle School (Fort Bend ISD). Across these appointments, his ensembles have consistently earned UIL Sweepstakes Awards, Best in Class honors, and multiple TMEA CC/CCC Honor Band Finalist placements, including 4th (2019), 5th (2023), 7th (2013), 9th (2017), 10th (2025), and 14th (2011) in Texas.
In 2022, the Berry Miller Band was awarded the prestigious John Philip Sousa Sudler Cup, recognizing outstanding excellence in middle school band programs nationwide. In 2026, Mr. Bennett was named Teacher of the Year at Berry Miller Junior High School.
A native of Pearland, Texas, Mr. Bennett is a graduate of Pearland High School, where he performed in the band program. He was selected for the 2001 TMEA All-State Symphonic Band and the 2001 National John Philip Sousa Honor Band. He earned his degree summa cum laude from the University of Houston in 2005, performing with the Spirit of Houston Marching Band and the Grammy-nominated Moores School of Music Wind Ensemble, with appearances at both TMEA and CBDNA conventions.
Mr. Bennett is an active member of the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, Texas State Teachers Association, and the Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Mu. He resides in Friendswood, Texas, with his wife, Pri, and their rescue animals.
Back
