Performer Bio Synopsis

The Dickerson Middle School Percussion Ensemble has performed for numerous festivals and conventions including the National Middle School Association Conference (2003), the Georgia Music Educators Association Conference (2004, 2018), and the National Band Association Southern Div. Conference (2005). Dickerson is the only middle school percussion ensemble to have received multiple invitations to perform for each of the three most prestigious music events for scholastic ensembles in the United States: The Midwest Clinic (2014, 2023), the Music For All Sandy Feldstein National Percussion Festival (2010, 2014, 2018) the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (2019, 2022) and were named a National Winner in the 2023 Mark of Excellence/National Percussion Ensemble Honors Project. In addition, Mr. Brown and the Dickerson Percussion Ensemble presented a clinic/performance, "Developing a Successful Middle School Percussion Ensemble", for the GMEA Conference (2005), PASIC (2006), and The Midwest Clinic (2008). The Dickerson Percussion Ensemble has presented “world premier” performances of Meanwhile in a Parallel Universe Redoux by Jim Casella at the Midwest Clinic in 2014 and Luminous by Tim Ferchen at the 2022 Percussive Arts Society International Convention, both with Professor She-e Wu as guest soloist. Past guest artists and clinicians for the ensemble include: Ralph Hardimon, Nick Angelis, Emil Richards, Lalo Davila, Glen Caruba, John Lawless, Dr. Tony McCutchen, Dr. John Culvahouse, Dr. John Parks, Sonny Emory, Kit Chatham, Michael Spiro, "Boomshaka" from Northwestern University, Fushu Daiko Taiko Ensemble, Dom Famularo, Yasukazu Kano of Kodo, Nick Petrella, She-e Wu, Dr. Andy Bliss, Patrick Sheridan, Dr. Gifford Howarth, Dr. Thad Anderson, Kirk Gay, Jeff Moore, and Zoro. Alumni of the Dickerson Percussion Ensemble have continued their percussion studies at universities including: Florida State University, University of Michigan, University of Georgia, University of Maryland, Indiana University, University of North Texas, and the Eastman School of Music.

Conductor's Bio

Scott Brown is currently the Assistant Band Director at Dickerson M.S. and Percussion Director at Walton H.S. Scott is Co-Director of the North Georgia Percussion Camp and Atlanta Percussion Symposium and Percussion Coordinator for the Music For All Summer Symposium Concert Band Division. Scott is a member of the Percussive Arts Society (PAS) Education Committee having previously served on the Percussion Ensemble Committee. He has been fortunate to work with many fine ensembles including the Lassiter and Kennesaw Mountain H.S. bands, and Beatrix, Spirit of Atlanta, and Atlanta CV Drum & Bugle Corps. Between fourteen years with Lassiter and eleven with Walton, Scott has been a part of 2 BOA National Championships, 11 BOA Regional Championships, 2 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parades, 2 Tournament of Roses Parades, the Waikiki Holiday Parade, and The National Cherry Blossom Parade as well as performances for the Georgia Music Educators Association Conference (5x), The Midwest Clinic (3x), and the Percussive Arts Society International Convention. While serving as Percussion Arranger and Consultant for Beatrix, the ensemble won the “High Percussion” awards for Drum Corps Netherlands and Drum Corps Europe. The Dickerson M.S. percussion ensemble has performed and presented clinic/performances for the GMEA Conference (3x), The Midwest Clinic (3x), PASIC (3x), and the Music For All National Percussion Festival (3x). Mr. Brown is co-author of “Field Level” and composer of “Kumi-daiko”, both published by Row-Loff Productions. Scott has served as a clinician and adjudicator throughout the United States and in The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Thailand, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, and Malaysia. Mr. Brown is a graduate of Western Carolina University, alumnus of Carolina Crown Drum & Bugle Corps, and an educational artist for Innovative Percussion, Mapex Drums, Majestic Percussion, Remo Drumheads, and Sabian Cymbals.
