Performer Bio Synopsis

The William Mason Wind Symphony is the premier wind band at Mason High School. The ensemble's mission is to offer students the opportunity to study and perform in an enriching artistic environment. The ensemble strives to challenge students to grow musically and intellectually through the performance of high-quality musical literature, meaningful interactions with professional musicians, and unique performance opportunities. The ensemble is team-taught by the district's band staff and private teachers. The 2022 Midwest Conference will be the ensemble's third performance at this prestigious event. In 2021 and 2022, the group was selected as a National Winner as part of the Foundation for Music Education's Mark of Excellence Wind Band Honors Program. In addition to the Midwest Clinic, the Mason High School Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and the Mason Middle School Symphonic Winds have performed at national and regional events, including the Music for All National Festival and the Ohio Music Education Association's State Conference. The Mason concert bands have also performed on professional and university stages, including The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, MO, Orchestra Hall in Chicago, IL, Carnegie Hall in New York City, NY, and Severance Hall in Cleveland, Ohio. The Mason Band Program is a proud recipient of the Sudler Flag of Honor and the Sudler Shield awarded by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. The staff and students of the Mason Wind Symphony are honored to perform at the 2022 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Conference. The ensemble would like to thank the Midwest Board of Directors and all its supporters for this prestigious performance opportunity.

Conductor's Bio

Edward F. Protzman is the Director of Bands at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. He is the district’s Performing Arts Coordinator and directs multiple concert bands, including the Mason High School Wind Symphony. Protzman is an active member of the National Association for Music Education, the Ohio Music Education Association, and the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles. He currently serves as the Ohio State Chairperson for the National Band Association. His ensembles have been selected to perform at music educator conferences in Ohio, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and the Music for All National Concert Band Festival. In 2021 and 2022, The Mason Wind Symphony was selected as a National Winner as part of The Foundation for Music Education’s National Wind Band Honors Program. Protzman is the 2019 winner of the George N. Parks Leadership in Music Education Award presented by the National Association for Music Education and Music for All. As a clinician and educator, he has worked with groups across the United States and Canada. His education includes a BA in Music from Kutztown University, Kutztown, PA, a BM in Music Education from Moravian College Bethlehem, PA, a MM in Wind Conducting from West Chester University, West Chester, PA, and a Graduate Diploma in Wind Conducting from the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. He is currently a candidate for the Doctorate of Music Education Degree at Liberty University, Lynchburg, Virginia.
