The Carmel High School Percussion Ensemble, representing Carmel, Indiana, is an integral part of a thriving band program that boasts nearly 600 students participating in various bands and guard activities each year. The community, known for its commitment to music education, has garnered prestigious awards, including the NAMM Foundation's "Best Community for Music Education" from 2008 through 2020. In 2018, the Carmel High School Band Program received the NBA Blue Ribbon Program of Excellence Award, a national honor recognizing their outstanding achievements in bands and band music. Among the program's standout ensembles, the top Wind Symphony has secured its place as a 7-time ISSMA State Champion and 26-time ISSMA State Finalist. Their journey has led them to perform at renowned events such as the CBDNA North Central Division Conference, the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival, the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, and the IMEA State Convention. As they embark on their first Midwest Clinic experience, the Carmel High School Percussion Ensemble eagerly anticipates the opportunity to contribute to the convention’s rich legacy of musical excellence.
Carmel High School Percussion Ensemble
Matthew Black is associate director of bands and director of percussion at Carmel High School in Carmel Indiana. He served as the percussion director at 7-time Grand National Champion Marian Catholic High School from 2014-2019. Matthew graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a degree in music education. He has presented clinics nationwide, speaking on percussion pedagogy and electronic music production for Ableton Live. He is a clinician for the Music For All Summer Symposium and is a frequent contributor for Marching Arts Education and Marching Round Table. He currently lives in Carmel Indiana with his wife Amy, daughter Julia, and their dogs Lydian and Hank.
