Performer Bio Synopsis

The Birdville Percussion Studio is nationally recognized for its focus on artistry and musical excellence. The ensemble is a three-time winner of the Percussive Arts Society International Percussion Ensemble Competition (2009, 2019, and 2024) and was named the 2019 National Winner of the Mark of Excellence National Percussion Ensemble Competition. Birdville percussion students have also achieved local success at contests such as the Texas Christian University Percussion Festival, winning the Intermediate Small Ensemble division in 2022. Also at the Lone Star Drumline Contest, where Birdville placed 2nd in the Intermediate Standstill Red Division in 2025, and was also the winner of the Best Quad Line and Best Front Ensemble caption awards. The Birdville percussion program regularly places several students a year in the Texas Music Educators Association All-Region groups, and has sent two Texas All-State percussionists from 2024-2025. The Birdville Percussion Ensemble has had the privilege of working with distinguished educators including Dr. Brian Zator, Dr. Francisco Perez, Dr. Dave Hall, and Dr. Matt Jordan. The program has also made meaningful contributions to the percussion ensemble repertoire by commissioning new works for percussion orchestra from Matt Moore, published by C. Alan Publications, and Russell Wharton, published by Tapspace. The program plans to continue this tradition by commissioning additional works from distinguished composers in the future. The Birdville Studio is supported through artist sponsorships with Pearl/Adams, Remo, Sabian, and Innovative Percussion. Birdville High School is part of Birdville Independent School District in North Richland Hills, Texas. The district serves more than 22,000 students and reflects a diverse student population: 47% Latino, 34% White, 9% Black, 5% Asian, and 5% identifying as other. The parent volunteer program via PTA and other avenues is robust and highly engaged, with particularly strong participation from band and percussion families. The Birdville United Band Booster Program also plays an integral role in supporting the success of the band program, with particularly strong involvement from percussion parents. Parent engagement is a cornerstone of success—not only for Birdville High School as a whole, but especially for the band and percussion programs. Birdville is dedicated to cultivating a safe and inviting environment for students to create music at the highest artistic level. Through this culture, we strive to develop a program of excellence at a consistently high bar, all while guiding strong members of society and servant leaders. The Birdville Percussion Studio is under the direction of Dr. Akira Robles and Eric Roundy.
