Performer Bio Synopsis

The World Jazz Studies program at Las Vegas Academy of the Arts is committed to inspiring creative minds in the field of America’s true art form, Jazz. Students undergo a rigorous and competitive audition process in order to be admitted into Las Vegas Academy and to be placed into the appropriate band and combo. The Jazz program has four big bands and offers elective classes in Advanced Instrumental Studies. The LVA Music Conservatory is a 12-time recipient of the GRAMMY Signature School Award, more than any other school in the country. Recent awards received by the LVA World Jazz Studies program include a 2021 DownBeat Award for Large Jazz Ensemble (17-time DownBeat Award winner), a 2020 YoungArts Merit winner, a 2019 NAfME All-National Honor Ensemble participant, and 2020 Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival finalist. They have been invited to perform at The Midwest Clinic in 2020/21, 2014, and 2009, The Monterey Jazz Festival in 2020/21, 2016, and, 2009, and the 2015 Jazz Education Network. They received “Best in State” at every Reno Jazz Festival in attendance and “Outstanding High School Combo” at the 2014 Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. Students in the LVA World Jazz Studies program have worked with Bob Mintzer, Joel Frahm, Louie Bellson, Randy Brecker, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Steve Davis, Peter Erskine, Jeff Hamilton, Chris Potter, Nat Reeves, Tom Scott, Marlena Shaw, the Juilliard Jazz Band, Clint Holmes, George Garzone, Jimmy Cobb, and Corey Christiansen, among others.

Conductor's Bio

Patrick Bowen has been the Director of the World Jazz Studies program at Las Vegas Academy of the Arts since 2001. Jazz bands at the Las Vegas Academy have been finalists at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival 13 times; won ‘Best in State’ at every Reno Jazz Festival in attendance; won 16 DownBeat Awards; and have been invited to perform at events including Monterey Jazz Festival, Brandon Jazz Festival, Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, and the Jazz Education Network Conference. The school is the recipient of twelve Grammy Awards, an honor unparalleled by any other high school in the nation. Patrick is presently the Principal Percussionist with the Las Vegas Philharmonic and has performed with stars such as Celine Dion, Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga, Garth Brooks, Harry Connick, Jr., Seth MacFarlane, and Usher. He has also played with Elton John, Clint Black, Sheila E, Wynona Judd, Lionel Richie, Dudley Moore, Boys II Men, Michael Bolton, Kenny G, Oleta Adams, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder, Don Henley, Tim McGraw, Brian McKnight, Andrea Bocelli, and David Foster. Patrick is a sought-after clinician and adjudicator for various jazz festivals throughout the country. Mr. Bowen has a Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from the Hartt School of Music (Cum Laude), a Master’s degree in Music Performance from the University of Montana, and a Teaching Certificate from UNLV. He studied jazz under Jackie McClean, Nat Reeves, Jaki Byard, and Alexander Lepak. Patrick Bowen is proud to be endorsed by Crescent Cymbals, Grover Pro Percussion, Regal Tip by Calato, and Toca Percussion. This is Patrick's third presentation at The Midwest Clinic.
