Performer Bio Synopsis

Harlingen High School South is in the beautiful, tropical Rio Grande Valley in Harlingen, Texas. The Harlingen High School South Band has approximately 200 students and a comprehensive band curriculum. The HHSS Band program has numerous musical ensemble opportunities, including marching bands, concert bands, jazz bands, mariachi, musical theatre, and chamber ensembles. Harlingen High School South is home to three consistent sweepstakes award-winning concert ensembles. Within the last several years, all concert bands have earned straight Division I ratings at UIL Concert/Sight-Reading Contests. Also, within the last several years, the HHSS Band has had students selected for the Texas All-State Band. Students even get their private instruction from teachers in the HHSS band program. The Harlingen High School South Band is led by Director of Bands Ronnie Rios, with associates Victor Garza, Raul Liendo, Laura Benavides, and Richard DelaRiva. The parents provide tremendous support for the students in the program. The band also receives enormous support from the HCISD administration and School Board, Harlingen High School South administration, and staff, who are always in relentless pursuit of student success. HHSS is home to some of the very finest students in South Texas. Dedicated, hard-working, and passionate are just a few characteristics that make the students of HHSS truly an Exemplary school (& Band). “When our students work so diligently from the first day to the last, great things usually occur,” states Rios. “Shaping and molding students into amazing human beings is always at the forefront of my agenda.” The Harlingen High School South “Mighty Hawk” Marching Band has participated in the UIL State Marching Contest. The marching band consistently receives first-division awards and “Grand Champion” awards at south and central Texas contests. The Marching band has also competed at the Bands of America Regional Championships, where they have been selected as a regional finalist. Aside from consistent Division I ratings at the Texas UIL evaluations, the HHSS Wind Ensemble has been a TMEA Honor Band State Finalist. The Jazz program at Harlingen High School South has three jazz ensembles that perform throughout the community and compete throughout Texas. All three ensembles are award-winning, consistently receiving superior ratings and “Best in Class” awards. The jazz students at Harlingen High School South compete in the TMEA region and area jazz auditions and have also been selected as Texas All-State Jazz Musicians. The ensemble has presented clinics at both The Midwest Clinic and TBA Conventions. Along with consistently placing numerous students in the TMEA All-Region Bands, the band students at HHSS are given many individual and chamber performance opportunities. HHSS has chamber music ensembles, including a clarinet choir, a saxophone quartet, and percussion ensembles. A chamber music festival also provides students opportunities in a solo or small chamber performance setting. Finally, the band also dedicates their efforts to the annual ‘Band Olympics’ and ‘Talent Show’ during band camp every August.
