Performer Bio Synopsis

Harwood Junior High is located in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District west of the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. In 2021, the district was named, “Most Diverse School District in America” by the website Niche. This diversity is celebrated in the more 70 native languages and cultures represented. Students in HEB attend elementary in grades K-6, junior high 7-9, and high school 10-12. The Harwood Junior High Percussion Ensemble consists of 2nd and 3rd year players, where they are enrolled in a full band class. Instruction and masterclass opportunities happen three days a week, in addition to weekly private lessons. All students participate in ensemble contest, as well as the preparation and performance of a mallet and a snare solo at contest each year. Percussion ensembles have maintained more than a decade of superior ratings. Each year, Harwood students earn multiple positions in the Texas Music Educators Association All-Region Band. The Harwood Percussion Ensemble was also selected as a 2020 PAS International Percussion Ensemble Competition Winner. Band instruction begins in 7th grade in a homogenous setting where daily focus is on fundamentals and reading skills. After the first year of instruction, students are placed in one of two ability based bands. These two bands participate in Solo/Ensemble Contest, HEB Honor Band, TMEA All Region, open house performances, junior high football games, and 3 seasonal concerts. Harwood performing bands are often asked to guest perform within the community. Some of these events include Veteran’s Day, Elementary Citizenship Day, National Medal of Honor Ceremony, Jump for Joy, and as the guest band at the Trinity High School football games when the high school band is out of town. More than 250 members are part of the Harwood Band. The Harwood Band is a consistent sweepstakes winner at the Texas UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest. In most recent history, Harwood Band have been recognized as 2018 and 2019 Commended Winners in the Mark of Excellence National Wind Band Honors and 2016, 2017, 2018 best Junior high band of the day at the Ovation Music Festival. The beginning band was named 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 best band of the day at the Sandy Lake Band Festival. Individually, band students consistently earn 1st Divisions on solo and ensembles, and earn a significant number of positions in the HEB Honor Band and TMEA Region 31 Honor Band.

Conductor's Bio

Doyle Bellville has taught for 21 years, 12 of these years at Harwood Junior High. As Director of Bands at Harwood Junior High, Mr. Bellville conducts the top performing ensemble, assists the second band, and teaches beginning flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon and percussion classes. During his time at Harwood, participation in the band program has nearly doubled with an average beginning band of 120 students. The Harwood Band has been recognized as Commended Winners in the Mark of Excellence National Wind Band Honors in 2018 & 2019 and best junior high band of the day at the Ovation Music Festival 2016, 2017 & 2018. Mr. Bellville was recognized as one of Music and Arts top 25 teachers of the year in 2017. Under his direction, the Harwood Bands are consistent Texas UIL Sweepstakes recipients. Prior to his current position, Mr. Bellville was director of bands at Gunn Junior High in Arlington, Texas. During his tenure, the program was revitalized. The band more than doubled in size and was awarded its first UIL sweepstakes in 8 years. He began his teaching career at Bowie High School in Arlington, Texas where has was assistant director and the percussion specialist. With his guidance, the 3rd Band at Bowie High School were consistent 1st division bands and his 9th grade bands were awarded with regular sweepstakes at Texas UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest. Mr. Bellville’s drumlines were highly competitive in the Dallas/Fort Worth Area contests: awarded 1st place at the University of Texas at Arlington Drumline Contest and 3rd Place at the Lone Star Classic Drumline Contest, with a top snare line caption awards in 2002. Mr. Bellville is a graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington, where his main instrument was percussion. His professional memberships include Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Band Masters Association, Percussive Arts Society and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He resides in Hurst, Texas with his wife and two children, Patrick and Kate. Patrick, a bassoon player, is currently drum major of the high school band, and Kate has just finished her first year as a proud Harwood Hawk band member!
