The Tompkins High School Symphony Orchestra, part of Katy ISD, is a dynamic ensemble made up of students from both the band and orchestra programs. It brings together musicians from the varsity band (Tompkins Wind Symphony) and the top two string orchestras (Tompkins Sinfonia and Sinfonietta). Although the band and orchestra classes are scheduled simultaneously, much of their collaborative work occurs outside of regular school hours, with rehearsals on Monday afternoons and sectionals throughout the week. The band program at Tompkins consists of four different bands, while the orchestra program includes six separate ensembles, each organized by skill level and grade. Each ensemble meets every school day with auditions for these groups being held at the end of the previous school year. Since its founding in 2013, the Tompkins band and orchestra programs have gained a reputation for excellence, both individually and as a combined symphony. They consistently earn top UIL Sweepstakes ratings and have been recognized for their musical achievements. The musical pit orchestras were named Overall Outstanding Orchestra in 2016, 2022, and 2023 for productions of Into the Woods, Seussical the Musical, and Tuck Everlasting. The Tompkins Wind Symphony advanced to the Area TMEA Honor Band contest in 2018 and was a TMEA Honor Band State Finalist in 2022. Additionally, the Tompkins Band qualified for the UIL State Marching Contest in 2015, 2020, and 2023. The Tompkins Sinfonia was named TMEA Honor Orchestra in both 2018 and 2023, performing at the prestigious TMEA Convention in those years.
