Sight Reading Proficiency: Teaching The Music Without The Music

Clinic Synopsis:

The mission of the clinic will be to follow step by step strategies to prepare for Sight Reading events. Emphasis will be placed upon fundamental practices that will achieve successful outcomes from individual students as they prepare for life-long learning through the technique of Sight Reading. Sight Reading strategies will include exercises that deal with rhythmic counting, singing, use of metronome/tuner, individual musicianship and sight reading goals. (No Handout Available)

Carlos Luna - Biographical Information

Carlos Luna is currently serving his first year as Director of Fine Arts for the Laredo Independent School District in Laredo, Texas. He is the former Director of Bands at J.W. Nixon High School and former Coordinator of Bands for the Laredo Independent School District for 30 years. During his tenure as band director at J.W. Nixon High School, his band was invited to perform at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in 1994. Luna received his B.M. of Music from Texas A&I University at Kingsville and his M.S. in Education from Texas A&M International University. His Honors Winds at J.W. Nixon High School has won 28 consecutive U.I.L. Sweepstakes Awards in Class 5A. He serves as the T.M.E.A. Region XIV President, Immediate Past-President of the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra Board of Directors, and is a member of the Laredo Wind Ensemble Advisory Board and conductor of the ensemble. Luna is an active adjudicator and clinician throughout Texas and Oklahoma.
