Chris Pineda, director of bands at Liberty Junior High School in Richardson (TX), reinvigorated a low-performing band program to become a model for music education in any environment, much less a school in which, the majority of the students are economically disadvantaged. Pineda and his building principal, Stephen Quisenberry, will share concrete strategies for creating a culture of excellence that capitalized on the circumstances that, for others, may have seemed like obstacles. Chris Pineda is the head band director at Liberty Junior High School, a feeder of L.V. Berkner High School, in Richardson (TX). His duties include conducting the symphonic band, teaching an intermediate brass class, assisting with the concert band, and teaching beginning band classes in three elementary schools. In addition, he coordinates the curriculum and oversees the 6th grade band classes at six elementary schools in the Liberty attendance zone. Pineda is a Cum Laude Graduate of Southern Methodist University, receiving a bachelor’s in tuba performance, and a master’s in music education. In the spring of 2011, Southern Methodist University named him the Meadows School of the Arts Young Music Educator of the Year. He has presented clinics at the Texas Bandmasters Association, and twice overseas for the Wind Band Association of Singapore.
