Hands, Hearts, Minds: Engaging All of it in Band!
Clinic Synopsis:
See, hear, play, think, feel, create, ask! These are some of the many facets of skills development for young musicians. Emphasizing a holistic approach in the band setting, this session will help you learn to elevate your students’ experience to a higher level as you shape the total band musician. We will open the doors to multidimensional techniques, highlighting a rich rehearsal environment that focuses on performance, as well as listening, expression, evaluation, and contextual understanding.
Deborah Sheldon
- Biographical Information
Deborah Sheldon is professor and chair of music education and therapy in the Boyer College of Music and Dance at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Founder of the Temple Night Owls Campus/Community Band, Sheldon’s specialties include instrumental conducting, wind band literature, rehearsal techniques and teaching methods, assessment, research, music psychology, cognitive-behavioral techniques, and systematic observation. Her numerous articles in music education, pedagogy, and research are published in journals such as the Journal for Research in Music Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, Journal for Music Teacher Education, Journal of Music Therapy, Music Educators Journal, Journal of Band Research, The Instrumentalist, the Contributions to Music Education, and many state music journals.
Brian Balmages - Biographical Information
Brian Balmages (b. 1975) is an active composer, conductor, producer, and performer. He received his bachelor’s degree in music from James Madison University and his master’s degree from the University of Miami (FL). Mr. Balmages’s works for symphonic band, orchestra, and brass have been performed throughout the world, including the College Band Directors National and Regional Conferences, the Midwest Clinic, the International Tuba/Euphonium Conference, the International Trombone Festival, and the International Trumpet Guild Conference. His active schedule of commissions has included groups ranging from elementary schools to professional ensembles, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Miami Symphony Orchestra, University of Miami Wind Ensemble, Dominion Brass, the United States Marine Band Tuba/Euphonium Quartet, Boston Brass and others. Among the professional artists that have commissioned him are James Jenkins, Principal Tuba of the Jacksonville Symphony; Lynn Klock, Saxophone Performing Artist for Selmer; Arthur Campbell, Clarinet Performing Artist for Leblanc; and Jerry Peel, former professor of horn at the University of Miami. He has also enjoyed world premieres in prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall.
As a conductor, Mr. Balmages enjoys engagements with numerous honor bands, orchestras, university groups, and professional ensembles throughout the country. Notable guest conducting appearances have included the Midwest Clinic, College Band Directors Regional Conference, Mid-Atlantic Wind Conductors Conference, the Atlantic Classical Orchestra Brass Ensemble, and an appearance at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore. He has also served as an adjunct professor of instrumental conducting and Acting Symphonic Band Director at Towson University in Maryland.
Currently, he is Director of Instrumental Publications for The FJH Music Company Inc. in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He resides in Baltimore with his wife, Lisa and their sons, Jacob and Collin.
