Public School or Grad School: Next Steps for the Young Teacher

Clinic Synopsis:

What are the advantages and disadvantages of entering graduate school before taking that first job as a teacher? Mr. Brumley, who attended graduate school immediately after receiving his undergraduate degree, and Ross Patterson, a public school teacher of four years before entering grad school, will share their thoughts based on the paths each took and where it has brought them thus far. Dr. Lautzenheiser will offer his perspective and will field questions from attendees. (No Handout Available)

Ross Patterson - Biographical Information

Ross Patterson is currently pursuing a master’s degree in music education at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Prior to his graduate study, he was the associate band director at Robinson Middle School in Plano, Texas for four years. He is a native of Weatherford, Texas and graduated from the University of North Texas with bachelor’s degrees in music education and music theory in 2007. He instructed the concert bands, the jazz band, and various woodwind and brass beginner classes. In the summers of 2009 and 2012, he served as an assistant director with the Texas Youth Orchestra. He is a trombonist with the Lone Star Wind Orchestra, directed by Eugene Corporon, and is continuing his teaching career during graduate study as a private low brass instructor in the Lewisville, Plano, and Richardson Independent School Districts.
