Making Connections: Musical and Professional Advice for the Young Band Director
- We will share experiences and advice for the young band director related to making connections in professional relationships and in student/parent/community relationships, as well as making connections in rehearsals to philosophy of teaching and practice of teaching. The idea is to build a solid foundation of approach in the workplace and to connect the foundation to the acts of music education and performance. (No Handout Available)

- Sue Samuels is the director of bands at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where she teaches and administers the Marching Blazers, the Wind Symphony, the Symphony Band, and the Blazer Band, as well as teaches courses in conducting and music education. Since she arrived in Birmingham, the bands at UAB have continued to grow and thrive under her direction. UAB annually hosts more than 200 high school band performers at the All-Star Band Festival each fall and more than 600 young musicians at the annual Middle School and High School Honor Band festivals each December. In addition, Dr. Samuels conducts the UAB Community Wind Symphony, a group of interested amateur musicians of all ages who perform an annual July 4th concert to crowd of over 4000. She is a strong advocate for chamber music and for music education and actively supports all other facets of instrumental music at UAB. Samuels is frequently invited to serve as a clinician, conductor, adjudicator, and guest speaker throughout the country.
