This clinic details the fundamental knowledge, skills, and attitudes that prospective music majors need in order to make a successful transition from high school to college. Specific exercises are offered, along with supporting online resources. It also suggests steps that school band and orchestra directors can take to identify, encourage, and guide future musicians and music educators. It is based on the clinician’s 25 years of experience teaching in elementary through graduate schools.
Robert Franzblau
- Biographical Information
Dr. Robert Franzblau serves as Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Rhode Island College, a position he has held since 1997. In addition to conducting the Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds, his duties include teaching courses in conducting, music theory, and music education at the graduate and undergraduate levels. He is Music Director of the Rhode Island Wind Ensemble, an adult community band based in Providence. Dr. Franzblau earned the Bachelor of Music from the University of Iowa; studied conducting with John P. Paynter at Northwestern University, earning a Master of Music; and received his Ph.D. in music education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is active as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator for bands throughout the country and is a contributing author to the Instrumentalist magazine and to GIA and Meredith Music Publications.
