When Riccardo Muti became the music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2010, he expressly empowered the organization to take music to as many people as possible, “even to prisons.” Driven by the power of music to transcend cultural divides and enact positive social change, the Negaunee Music Institute at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra has been producing programming for at-risk, detained, and incarcerated youth since then. A panel of Chicago Symphony Orchestra musician(s), members of its training ensemble Civic Orchestra of Chicago and program directors will share their experience working with this often overlooked segment of the Chicago community, why this work is important, and how Midwest Clinic participants can also create similar initiatives in their own communities.
