Understanding Copyright Law and the Legal Implications for Music Teachers

Clinic Synopsis:

Copyright law and compliance…it’s always been one of those difficult (but necessary) subjects for educators in general and music educators in particular. “To promote the Progress of Science and useful Art, … ” our nation has adopted a set of laws, rules, rights and responsibilities supporting Article 1, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution, all of which are the source of ongoing dialogue and interpretation, that are the copyright laws of the United States. Join me for an overview of the law and consideration of some of the expectations and most common issues facing music educators concerning compliance with U.S. Copyright law.

Eric Martin - Biographical Information

Eric Martin is President and Chief Executive Officer of Music for All, Inc. Music for All is one of the largest arts organizations in the State of Indiana, and annually produces a national series of regional fall marching band competitions, the Bands of America Grand National Championships, its Music for All National Festival (for concert bands, orchestras, and percussion and chamber ensembles), and the Music for All Summer Symposium, the largest and most comprehensive residential band and orchestra camp in the nation. Each year, MFA directly touches the lives of over 90,000 students and teachers, and provides performance opportunities for students before more than 250,000 spectators. Eric is a Certified Festivals and Events Executive and honors graduate of Dartmouth College. He holds a Juris Doctor degree from University of Michigan Law School, and has been admitted by exam to the District of Columbia and State of Georgia bar associations.Prior to joining MFA, Eric was president of ELM Productions, an Atlanta based special events production company and in 1993, he won a Regional Emmy Award for his production of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Holiday Parade on Superstation TBS.Eric is a member of the Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management (TCEM) Department’s Advisory Committee at IUPUI’s School of Physical Education and Tourism Management, and a Past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the International Festivals and Events Association (“IFEA”), In September 2000, Eric was inducted into the Miller Brewing Hall of Fame, the highest honor awarded by IFEA.
