All Kids Can Learn, Part 1: "Let's Wrap Our Brains Around That"

  • The Berkner Area of Richardson ISD has faced and continues to face many changes and challenges. This is the case for a great number of schools throughout our country. This clinic intends to show how "Team Berkner" has strived to turn what some may consider to be obstacles, into opportunities. By "wrapping their brains around" their programs, Jackson , Pineda and Weak have developed a curriculum that includes smarter teaching, better classroom management happier kids and greater retention.

  • Lynne Jackson is currently in her 44th year as a music educator. She has degrees from the University of Michigan and Vandercook College of Music. Ms. Jackson is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Education at Southern Methodist University and also teaches part-time at Berkner High School in Richardson, Texas. In 1983, Ms. Jackson was selected as the Richardson ISD Teacher of the Year. In 2010, Ms. Jackson was awarded the Meritorious Achievement Award by the Texas Bandmaster’s Association. The past five years, Ms. Jackson, along with the wonderful teachers in the Berkner Area, has dedicated herself to turning what some may think of as obstacles into opportunities. Lynne is widely known throughout Texas as a clinician and mentor to young students and teachers.

  • Christopher Pineda
  • Christopher Pineda is in his seventh year of teaching and his sixth year as Director of Bands at Liberty Junior High in Richardson, Texas. He received his Master's Degree in Music from Southern Methodist University. Liberty Junior High is a Title 1 school that represents a great deal of diversity and offers many challenges. During his tenure at Liberty, Chris has been able to transform the band program into one of the most successful CC programs in Texas. For the 2013-14 school year, Chris was chosen by his colleagues as "Teacher of the Year."

  • Andrew Weak
  • Andrew Weak is in his fifth year of teaching and in his third year as Director of Bands at Apollo Junior High, Richardson Texas. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Baylor University. Apollo Junior High is a Title 1 school that represents a great deal of diversity and offers many challenges. Under Andrew's leadership, the Apollo band program has continued to grow and thrive. In particular, Andrew has made great strides in developing a very successful curriculum for the mixed beginner woodwind classes in the Berkner Area. Andrew's students also participate in full orchestra and a newly formed jazz band.
