Rehearsal Strategies: Lead, Follow, and Get Out of the Way!

Clinic Synopsis:

Utilizing examples from the wind band repertoire and incorporating audience participation, Benjamin Lorenzo and Dennis Llinás share ideas to help young directors get the most out of rehearsals. The session is divided into three part: offering strategies one can employ before, during, and after setting foot on the podium. The topics of discussion will be accompanied by practical exercises that engage the students, develop ensemble skills, and build musicianship.

Benjamin Lorenzo - Biographical Information

Benjamin Lorenzo serves as Associate Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands at the University of Arkansas. In this capacity, he conducts the Symphonic Band and oversees all aspects of the athletic band program including direction of the Razorback Marching Band. He received a Bachelor of Music degree in Trombone Performance from Florida International University, and a Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Conducting from The University of Texas at Austin. Before teaching at the university level, Dr. Lorenzo taught in the public schools of Florida and Texas. He is involved in the development of wind bands throughout Latin America and has conducted ensembles such as the Latin American Wind Orchestra (Colombia), the Municipal Band of Manizales (Colombia), and the Wind Orchestra of the Dominican Republic. In addition, he has served as a guest conductor with the World Youth Wind Orchestra Project (WYWOP) in Austria. He has also presented sessions at several music education conferences and contributed to the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band Series.

Dennis Llinás - Biographical Information

Dr. Dennis Llinás is the Associate Director of Bands at Louisiana State University. His teaching responsibilities include conducting the Symphonic Winds, teaching undergraduate and graduate conducting, assisting with the Tiger Marching Band, and directing the Bengal Brass Basketball Band. He received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Florida International University, and a Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting from The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Llinás has been a guest conductor throughout the United States and abroad. He has worked with Universidad del Norte and Colegio Americano in Barranquilla, Colombia as well as programs in Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and Indiana. As a composer, Llinás has two pieces recorded on Summit Records by Mark Hetzler and is currently working on a commission for the Dallas Winds. Llinás taught public schools in Florida and Texas before his appointment at Louisiana State University.
