In the early years of instrumental instruction, a carefully sequenced approach to the introduction of foundational skills and concepts may not provide instant gratification, but WILL result in motivated students who can take ownership of their learning in both individual and ensemble skills. Examples of application of the principles outlined will be given.

Carole Smith-Grooms
- Biographical Information
Carole Smith Grooms currently teaches band, strings and guitar at Freedom Middle School in Franklin, TN. Past positions include band director at Moore County High School, Lynchburg, TN and assistant director to the Franklin High School Marching Band, 1990-1995. She is a NBPTS Certified teacher.
Ms. Grooms is a member of Middle Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association (Past President,) TnMEA, TnBA, ASBDA (Region V Representative 2009-2014,) NAfME, NBA, ASTA and Phi Beta Mu . She performs with the Nashville Wind Ensemble on flute.
The Freedom Middle School Band performed at the TnMEA conference in 2000, and the Freedom Jazz Band performed for the National Association of Middle Schools National Conference in 2006 and for the ASBDA National Convention in 2009. Ms. Grooms has presented clinics at the TnMEA state conferences, ASBDA regional conferences, Music For All Directors Symposium and served as a guest clinician/conductor and adjudicator in TN, AL, GA, VA and KY.
