How many times have we pleaded with students to subdivide? How often have we wondered why students can't hear that missed accidental? While our students generally do a great job with technique and notation, many are missing the internal musicianship components that enable high-level ensemble participation. This session presents activities for developing students’ tonal, rhythmic, creative abilities all while developing their instrumental technique and notation reading abilities.
Chad West
- Biographical Information
Dr. West is Assistant Professor of music education at Ithaca College where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education. His degrees are from University of Michigan (Ph.D.), University of Georgia (M.M.Ed.), and Arizona State University (B.M.). He has 8 years experience as a public school band director and served as the Associate Conductor of the Atlanta Wind Symphony.
Dr. West has performed as a trumpeter for Princess Cruise Lines, Etowah Jazz Society, the Saline Big Band, and for numerous light operas and community ensembles. He serves often as a clinician for school honor bands throughout New York and as a NYSSMA adjudicator.
Dr. West's research has been published in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Arts Education Policy Review, Journal of Music Teacher Education, UPDATE, and Music Educators Journal. He serves on the editorial review board of Music Educators Journal.
