The "It" Factor in School Orchestra Literature

Clinic Synopsis:

One of the best ways to motivate students is with the music they learn. We discuss the attributes of selected school orchestra literature and how to enlist stringed instrument students to take ownership of their musical learning.

Gail Barnes - Biographical Information

Dr. Barnes is professor of Music Education and Director of the USC String Project. She received her BM and MM from the University of Michigan and her PhD in 1998 from the Ohio State University. Dr. Barnes teaches courses in stringed instrument methods and orchestra literature. Dr. Barnes’ professional interests include community and school orchestra programs and access to music education for under-served youth. In addition, she is a co-author of Measures of Success for String Orchestra (published by The FJH Music Company), a method book for young string players. She is the founder of a forum for string and orchestra teachers on Facebook that has over 4000 members. Dr. Barnes continues to work with student-aged musicians in her role as Director of the USC String Project. In addition, she has conducted All-State Orchestras in Florida, Georgia and Michigan. In 2014, her peers at the USC School of Music voted her the Cantey Outstanding Faculty member.

David A. Pope - Biographical Information

David A. Pope is Director of Orchestras at Manatee High School and also serves as the Associate Conductor for the Sarasota Youth Orchestras. Previously, Dr. Pope was an orchestra director for Maryville City Schools in Tennessee. He also served as the Executive Director of the Tallahassee Youth Orchestras, and on the orchestral librarian staffs at the Aspen Summer Music Festival and Spoleto Music Festival USA. Dr. Pope received his bachelor's degree from the Florida State University, master's degree from the University of South Carolina, and Ph.D. in Music Education from the Florida State University. Currently, Dr. Pope serves as a senior conductor and co-director at Florida State University’s String Orchestra Camp. Dr. Pope has presented string pedagogy clinics and his research at state, regional, and national conferences. Dr. Pope currently serves on the Florida Orchestra Association’s Executive Board.
