Losing Control, Gaining Engagement: Tips and Techniques Inspired by Science for Improving Motivation and Performance in Large Ensembles

Clinic Synopsis:

Research from the fields of neuroscience, psychology, and social dynamics includes findings with the potential to positively affect ensemble rehearsals. This session will include specific rehearsal tips and techniques based upon this research, with a particular focus on those likely to improve students’ motivation, performance, and long-term engagement. We will rehearse a wind band and systematically demonstrate the positive impact of science-based rehearsal techniques.

Gary Hill - Biographical Information

Gary W. Hill is Prof. of Music and Dir. of Bands at Arizona St. U., where he conducts various instrumental ensembles and teaches courses in the graduate conducting program. Previous positions include the U. of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory, East Texas State U., the U. of Colorado, Boulder and public school posts in MI. He has been a guest conductor and clinician in more than a dozen countries and throughout most of the U.S., which include performances with high school honor bands, and numerous college and professional ensembles. Hill is one of the most sought after guest conductors and clinicians in the wind band field; he has presented more than 100 workshops on conducting/rehearsal technique for instrumental teachers and served as a clinician for thousands of bands and orchestras. Hill’s current research agenda includes: an exploration of biochemical reactions spawned by the musical process; and work on a monograph concerning the future of instrumental music education.

Serena Weren - Biographical Information

Serena Weren is the Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at Loyola University New Orleans. She holds a DMA in Wind Conducting at Arizona State University where she worked with Gary W. Hill and Wayne Bailey. She also holds a MM in Instrumental Conducting and a MMEd both from Arkansas State University, a BM in Music Education from Temple University, and a BA in Music and Geology from Franklin & Marshall College. She was the Director of Bands at Middletown High School South and River Plaza Elementary School in Middletown, New Jersey. Her current research agenda includes an exploration of the associations between musical engagement, biochemicals, and social networks, as well as investigating participatory motivation in musical activities.
