- Mr. John W. Wilkerson is currently in his 17th year of teaching. He is a native of north central Florida, and recently moved to Arkansas. Mr. Wilkerson received diplomas from Union County High School, Florida in 1991, a Bachelor Degree in Music from Jacksonville University, Florida in 1999, a Master of Education in Administration/Supervision and Leadership from the University of Phoenix, Arizona in 2012, and a an Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership from Liberty University, Virginia in 2015. He is in his fourth year as the Director of Bands and Head Director for the Star City School District. Prior to coming to Star City he served as the Director of Bands and Head of Fine Arts Department at Middleburg High School, Florida for six years. He also served as the Clay County Band Coordinator for the school district, a position that he has held for five years. He served as the Director of Bands/Electives Department Head at Baldwin Middle/Senior High School, Florida for seven years.
His bands have earned both Superior and Excellent ratings at the district, state and the national levels. In 2015, Star City High School Band earned their first sweepstakes award in 29 years. The Star City Bulldog Regiment received the Class “D” Grand Champions at the Championships at the Rock, and Class “A” Champions at the Paragould Pride Invitational. The overall band program at Star City School as grown from 52 students four years ago to over 200 today.
While serving as director of the Middleburg High School Band, the band earned numerous superior and excellent ratings at district and state level. In December of 2010 the MHS Band was awarded the 2010 Chick-fil-a Bowl National Grand Champions in concert band, jazz band, parade band, and field show. In 2008 the winter guard program was the Florida Federation of Colorguard Circuit Scholastic AAA Beyond Division State Champions.
At Baldwin Middle/Senior High School the band performed at the Concert Band Invitational at the University of North Florida, being the only band invited to perform at the City of Jacksonville Day at the State Capitol in Tallahassee, Florida. On July 4, 2005 the Baldwin Middle/Senior High School Band marched in the 4th of July Parade in Washington, DC, representing the State of Florida. Performing in this parade allowed the band to showcase their talents for former Vice President Dick Cheney. The Baldwin Bands were also the 2003 FMBC Class 1A State Percussion Champions and the 2003 FMBC Class 2A State Parade Band Champions.
In 1996, Mr. Wilkerson was inducted into the Florida Colligate Music Educators National Conference Hall of Fame and was a part of the 1996 Closing Ceremonies of the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2010 he was inducted into the Tealsound Drum and Bugle Corps Inaugural Hall of Fame. He marched with Suncoast Sound Drum and Bugle, and served on staff at Suncoast Sound Drum and Bugle Corps,The Cadets of Bergen County and Tealsound Drum and Bugle Corps. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Teal Sound Drum and Bugle Corps.
Mr. Wilkerson is an educational artist for Mapex/Majestic Percussion, Jupiter Instruments, and Evans Drumheads. His professional affiliations include: Music Educators National Conference, The American Band Directors Association, The Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association, Arkansas Bandmasters Association, Arkansas Small Band Association, The Florida Bandmaster Association, Florida Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Educators Association.
Mr. Wilkerson and his wife Shari attend Pine Bluff First Assembly of God and he currently resides in Star City, AR with his wife Shari, and 2 children Morgan 22 and Abigail 4.
