The Tricks of the Trade: Composing for Young Bands

  • thumbnail for Tim Fisher
  • Composer Tim Fisher will explore practical techniques that will help you write effectively for students in their first years of learning. Rather than focusing on the many limitations at the beginning level, he will ask the question, “What CAN students do?”, in order to find fresh and interesting ways to write for young bands. Band directors will also gain valuable insights into the composition process and be inspired to find engaging and meaningful repertoire, even if it only has 5 notes!

His works are published by Brolga Music, Grand Mesa Music and Jalen Publishing. A number of his works have featured on festival lists around Australia and internationally. They have appeared on JW Pepper's Editors’ Choice lists and been performed at The Midwest Clinic as part of new music reading sessions. In addition to his work as a composer, Tim has been a brass teacher and ensemble director at both Primary and Secondary school levels for over 20 years.
