Having a good ear is a must for a timpanist, yet many young percussionists find themselves lost when it comes to tuning timpani without the aid of a gauge or noisy external source like a pitch pipe or glockenspiel. This clinic will provide a comprehensive approach to ear training with the student percussionist in mind. Topics will include learning intervals in order of importance, sight singing, integrating smartphone apps and software, learning the ranges of timpani, and other important tuning concepts. Also covered are thoughts on basic sound production and tone color to produce the right sound for the right moment!
William Shaltis
- Biographical Information
Bill Shaltis is Principal Timpani of the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra. Previously, Shaltis was Principal Percussion/Assistant Timpani of the Evansville Philharmonic and Owensboro Symphony.
Shaltis has performed and presented at several music festivals and conventions in the USA and abroad, including both the PASIC and the NAfME national conventions and at music festivals in China, France, and Iceland. Shaltis created the educational video podcast series Good Beats and is published through Bachovich Music Publications.
Shaltis currently teaches at Missouri Southern State University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he was awarded the Muriel Kauffman Award for Excellence in Teaching. Previously, he was the Consortium Instructor of Percussion at the University of Evansville. Other faculty appointments include the Interlochen Arts Camp and Wesley Shepard Honor Band.
Shaltis is a performing artist/clinician for Grover Pro Percussion, Remo, Yamaha, and Zildjian.
