- Michele Fernandez Denlinger graduated from Miami High in 1985 and attended UF on an oboe scholarship with plans to enter law school. After graduating cum laude in ‘89 with a B.A., Michele traded in law school plans to return to her Alma Mater to teach band, where, during the next ten years her Marching, Symphonic, Jazz Bands consistently earned top ratings and were selected for appearances at the Midwest Clinic (1993 & 1998), IAJE (1994, Boston & 1999, NY), Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland 1996), FMEA All-State Conf (’94 & ’97 Tampa, FL), and featured in national publications. In 1999 Michele was featured on “CBS Sunday Morning”, Downbeat Magazine, as well as F.E.A T.O.Y at MHS. While at MHS she served as a local arranger/drill writer, performed as a pianist in a salsa band and earned a Master’s from F.I.U., where she later served as adjunct professor. After taking a leave to care for her family in ‘99, Michele returned to MHS in ’03 to teach English, Special Ed. and chemistry. Michele co-presented a clinic on Latin rhythms at the Midwest Clinic (’05). In ’07 she returned to teaching band and created an award-winning program at Coral Way K-8 Center in Miami, where she was named T.O.Y. and remained for 8 years. Most recently she re-ignited the once-prolific program at Palmetto Middle to achieve Superior ratings with her Orchestra and Symphonic Band in just the first 6 months. Michele frequently serves as a clinician and district/state-level adjudicator in Florida.
