Diagnosing The Problem, Prescribing The Solution: Tips and Strategies for Successful Teaching In A Title I School

Clinic Synopsis:

This presentation will provide useful teaching strategies for teaching in Title I schools. These techniques are easily applicable to a variety of school settings. We will “diagnose” and “prescribe” several common issues such as teaching various levels in one class, creating curriculum, raising funds, creating a presence in the community to various other essential topics.

Gregory Denson - Biographical Information

Gregory L. Denson is presently the Assistant Director of Bands at Griffin Middle School in the Cobb County School System in Smyrna, GA. He is a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia having received a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance. After Morehouse, Denson attended The Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida where he received a Master of Music Education with teacher certification. Mr. Denson began his teaching career at D. M. Therrell High School in Atlanta. While at Therrell students participated in GMEA LGPE, performed in numerous college homecoming parades, the University of Georgia JanFest Clinic, and a host of community and civic events. Mr. Denson also served as the Co-Director of the Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Jazz Ensemble. As the former Director of Bands at Sutton, the band program has tripled under Mr. Denson’s tutelage. Students participate in Symphonic Band I, Symphonic Band II, Concert Band, woodwind ensemble, and brass ensemble. Students have been selected to participate in All-State, District Honor Band, All-County, UGA MidFest, Domecoming, Conn-Selmer Youth Band, and the APS Youth Symphony Orchestra. Most recently the Sutton Middle School Symphonic Band was selected to participate in the WorldStrides National Band and Orchestra Festival at Carnegie Hall. Sutton bands consistently earn superior ratings at GMEA District V LGPE and have established a tradition of musical excellence. Mr. Denson is currently completing a Ph.D. in Music Education with a focus in urban music teacher preparation at Georgia State University. At Griffin Middle, Mr. Denson teaches 6th Grade Beginning Brass and Percussion, 7th Grade Band, and assists with the 8th Grade Band.

Lebarron Mcwhorter - Biographical Information

Lebarron N. Mcwhorter is currently serving as the Associate Director of Bands at Miles College in Fairfield, Alabama. Mcwhorter earned the Master of Music degree in Instrumental Conducting from Reinhardt University in Waleska, Georgia and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama. Before his current appointment, he served as Director of Bands at Jonesboro High School in Jonesboro, Georgia and Director of Bands at Jefferson Davis High School in Montgomery, Alabama. Through facilitating student- focused learning and a consistent emphasis on fundamentals and leadership, Mcwhorter assisted his students in earning consistent superior and excellent ratings in both the concert and marching bands. Some of these achievements include performing in Disney Magic Music Days in Orlando, Florida and the Kennesaw State University Concert Band Invitational in Kennesaw, Georgia. Mcwhorter proudly served as a medical laboratory specialist and a euphonium player in the United State Army from 2002 to 2008. His previous assignments include the 161st Medical Battalion in Mobile, Alabama and the 151st Army Band in Montgomery, Alabama.
