Sherlock Holmes Had It Right All Along: The Life and Studies of a Conductor and Master Teacher

Clinic Synopsis:

Delve into deepening the conductor’s life and musical experiences utilizing the techniques, sleuthing skills, and intuitive powers of the greatest literary detective: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. This unique approach will include study techniques and process; consciousness-raising tactics; focus on conductor health, well-being, and work-life balance; and insights into improving deductive and reasoning powers as they relate to musicianship, score study, and conducting outcomes.

James Tapia - Biographical Information

James Tapia is in his seventeenth year as director of orchestral activities and professor of conducting at Syracuse University where he conducts the University Symphony Orchestra, oversees the orchestral program, and teaches conducting in the undergraduate and graduate programs. He is music director of the Syracuse Summer Festival Orchestra and conducts the Central Winds: Music Educators’ Wind Ensemble. Prior to his work at Syracuse University, Tapia served as Director of Bands at Pittsburg State University and Associate Director of Bands at The University of Michigan, where he was music director and conductor of the renowned Michigan All-State Orchestra and All-State Band. He has conducted the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Austin Bach Festival Orchestra, Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings, and Dallas Wind Symphony along with numerous conducting experiences in the academy. A strong advocate of music education, Tapia has presented many in-service workshops for public school educators as well as numerous clinic presentations at state and regional music education association conferences. In addition, he conducts All-State and honor Orchestras and Bands throughout the US and internationally, having served in these capacities in over 40 states and 15 countries. He holds degrees from the University of South Florida and The University of Texas at Austin.

Erin Tapia - Biographical Information

Erin Tapia is an instrumental music teacher in the Westhill Central School District in Syracuse, New York, where she conducts the High School Symphonic Band, Jazz Lab, 50+ student Brazilian Percussion Ensemble, and chamber music ensembles. Ms. Tapia’s ensembles have traveled often, including performances throughout New York State and in Chicago, Atlanta, Tampa, Orlando, Boston, and New York City. Her students are regularly selected to play in local and state honor bands and orchestras, and more than fifty of Ms. Tapia’s students have performed in collegiate instrumental music ensembles. Ms. Tapia is co-author of “The Sight Reading Book,” a set of 21 sight-reading books carefully aligned with state-specific criteria at six different levels of difficulty. She maintains a private flute studio and performs on flute and piccolo with the Central Winds: Music Educators’ Wind Ensemble and the Syracuse Summer Festival Orchestra. Ms. Tapia is active as guest conductor and has presented clinics on instrumental pedagogy, music literacy, score study, curriculum, musician wellness, and teaching in the common core era to music educators at County, All-State, State, and National conferences. Ms. Tapia holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Music Education from Syracuse University.
