Tips and Tricks for Improving Your Saxophone Section

Clinic Synopsis:

Dr. Hutchins will address pedagogical issues concerning teaching the saxophone including basic maintenance, equipment selection, embouchure and tongue position, intonation, tone production, and more! This session is geared toward the middle school and high school band director and private instructor.

Jeffery Kyle Hutchins - Biographical Information

Praised for his “formidable technique” and “enviable uniformity of tone” by The Saxophone Symposium, Jeffery Kyle Hutchins is a concert saxophonist, chamber musician, improviser, and performance artist who focuses on the creation and promotion of contemporary music and interdisciplinary media. His work emphasizes close collaboration with composers and artists to create adventurous programming, often incorporating the body, the voice, the instrument, technology, and space. He has performed concerts in Asia, Europe, and North America and participated in the creation of more than 100 new works. His performances have been broadcast on Fresh Ink on WCNY-FM (New York) and Nova on Raidió Teilifís Éireann lyric fm (Ireland). He performs regularly on stages for contemporary and experimental music, including Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt (IMD), Society for Electroacoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS), the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC), the New York City Electronic Music Festival (NYCEMF), New Horizons Music Festival, New Ruckus, Northern Spark, Punk-Ass Classical, Zeitgeist New Music Cabaret, as well as the Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium, North American Saxophone Alliance Conference, and the World Saxophone Congress. He has recorded for numerous record labels including Avid Sound Records, Emeritus Records, GIA Publications, Farpoint Recordings, and Klavier Records. As a devoted educator and pedagogue, Hutchins has held residencies and taught masterclasses at universities across the country. He has given clinics and presentations at the Iowa, Minnesota, Texas, and Virginia Music Educator’s Association Conference, the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors (NACWPI) National Conference, and the Association for Technology in Music Instruction and College Music Society Conference. In 2015, Hutchins received the Doctor of Music degree from the University of Minnesota, where he studied with Eugene Rousseau. There he was a recipient of the prestigious Berneking Fellowship and served as Instructor of Saxophone. He has formerly taught on the faculties of Bemidji State University, the University of Northern Iowa, and the E. Rousseau Workshop at Shell Lake. Hutchins is as Artist/Teacher of Saxophone at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where he teaches studio saxophone, directs the Jazz Lab Band and New Music Ensemble, and teaches courses in ear training and jazz history.
